Description

Orlando Abrigo Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore 2021 is a finely crafted expression of one of Roero’s most revered crus. Sourced from dramatically steep, sandy slopes that must be farmed entirely by hand, this Nebbiolo captures both the delicacy and depth that have made Valmaggiore a reference point for the appellation. It’s a wine of authenticity and character, built on low yields and meticulous work in the vineyard.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Valmaggiore shows a luminous garnet core with delicate brick-tinged edges, typical of Nebbiolo even in its youth. The nose is refined and expressive, offering aromas of wild strawberries, dried rose petals, violet, blood orange zest, and red cherries, layered with hints of licorice, spice, and a subtle, sandy mineral note. On the palate, the wine is elegant and precise rather than opulent, with fine, taut tannins and a vibrant, mouthwatering acidity. Flavors of red currant, cherry and raspberry are woven with notes of anise, dried herbs and a whisper of tobacco. The sandy soils of Valmaggiore give a lifted, perfumed profile and a certain suppleness to the tannins, making the wine approachable in its youth while retaining structure for aging. Enjoyable now with decanting, it should evolve gracefully over 8–12 years, gaining more complexity, truffle tones and savory depth with time in bottle.

Production
The Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore 2021 comes from the historic Valmaggiore cru in Roero, set on extremely steep, south- and southwest-facing hillsides composed predominantly of light, sandy soils with marine origins. These poor, well-drained sands naturally limit yields and accentuate perfume and finesse in Nebbiolo. Because the slopes are too steep for machinery, all vineyard work—from pruning to harvest—is carried out entirely by hand, allowing precise selection of bunches at optimal ripeness. Grapes are typically harvested relatively late to ensure full phenolic maturity while preserving freshness. In the cellar, the fruit is gently crushed and undergoes a traditional, temperature-controlled fermentation with extended maceration on the skins to extract color, aromatics and fine tannins. The wine is then aged in a combination of neutral large oak and/or older barrels to allow slow integration of tannin and development of complexity, without overwhelming its delicate aromatics, before being bottled with minimal intervention to preserve terroir character.

Food & Serving
This Nebbiolo d'Alba pairs beautifully with classic Piedmontese dishes such as tajarin pasta with ragù, braised veal or beef, vitello tonnato, and mushroom-based dishes, especially those with porcini or truffles. It also works wonderfully with game birds, roast lamb, charcuterie, and aged cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy-style glasses to highlight the wine’s aromatic complexity. Decant for 45–60 minutes if enjoyed in its youth to soften the tannins and allow the floral and spice notes to fully emerge.
