Description

Orlando Abrigo Barbaresco Riserva Rongalio 2019 is a finely structured expression of Nebbiolo from Treiso, one of Barbaresco’s most respected communes. Made from low-yielding, historic vines in the Meruzzano area, it combines elegant fruit with impressive depth, firm tannins and the long ageing potential expected of a Riserva. The Rongalio wine has held Riserva status since 2011, reflecting its distinctive character and ability to develop over time.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Barbaresco shows a deep garnet colour with the brick-red nuances that are characteristic of mature Nebbiolo. The nose is layered and refined, combining red cherry, wild berries and rose with hints of violet, spice, earth and subtle savoury tones. On the palate, it is full-bodied yet composed, with concentrated fruit, vibrant acidity and a pronounced, finely grained tannic structure. Carefully managed extraction brings depth and complexity without obscuring the wine’s elegant character. The long finish reveals mineral and gently balsamic nuances. Already compelling, the 2019 vintage has the structure to mature gracefully for many years in a well-kept cellar.

Production
The grapes come from the Rongalio vineyard in the Meruzzano area of Treiso, where historic Nebbiolo Lampia vines grow at approximately 300 metres above sea level on favourable south-west-facing slopes. The medium-grained, calcareous and mineral-rich soils contain clay veins that contribute to the wine’s depth and strong sense of place. Grapes are harvested at low yields of around 50–60 hectolitres per hectare and vinified in separate lots to preserve the identity of each microzone. Gentle pressing is followed by extended maceration: part of the fruit spends around three weeks on the skins, while the remainder undergoes submerged-cap maceration for up to 45 days, building the wine’s distinctive tannic framework. It then matures for 24 months in large casks before a further 12 months of bottle ageing.

Food & Serving
Serve at 16–18°C, ideally after allowing the wine time to open. Decanting for approximately one to two hours is recommended when enjoying the bottle young, both to soften its tannins and to reveal its aromatic layers; older bottles should be decanted carefully, if at all, to avoid disturbing the sediment. Its structure and savoury complexity make it an excellent partner for braised beef, game, lamb, osso buco, truffle dishes, mushroom-based preparations and mature hard cheeses.

Producer
Founded through Giovanni Abrigo’s passion for the vineyards of Treiso, Orlando Abrigo is closely associated with the Meruzzano area and its distinctive hillside terroirs. The estate’s Rongalio wines are made from historic vines planted in 1984 and 1991, with separate vinification used to express the character of the individual parcels. The winery’s careful vineyard work, low yields and patient maturation have established Barbaresco Rongalio as a notable, age-worthy interpretation of Nebbiolo from the Langhe.
