Oddero Barolo Vignarionda Riserva 2019

Oddero Barolo Vigna Rionda Riserva 2019 is a rare, single-vineyard Barolo from one of Serralunga d’Alba’s most celebrated crus. Made exclusively from Nebbiolo and produced in very limited quantities, it combines the structured, mineral character of Vigna Rionda with the extended maturation required of a Riserva. Its pedigree and remarkable longevity make it a compelling choice for collectors and lovers of traditionally styled Barolo.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays an intense, brilliantly clear garnet-red colour. Its complex bouquet opens with blackberry, rose and dark fruit, followed by balsamic nuances of tobacco, liquorice and cinchona bark, together with an evocative note of wet limestone. On the palate, it is full-bodied and mineral, with lively freshness and a pronounced yet polished tannic structure. The finish is long, dry and persistent, revealing the precision and depth typical of Nebbiolo from Serralunga d’Alba. Already impressive for its concentration and balance, the 2019 vintage has considerable ageing potential. With proper cellaring, it should develop further layers of dried flowers, spice, leather and earthy complexity over the coming decades.

Production
The grapes come from the historic Vigna Rionda cru in Serralunga d’Alba, where the vineyards lie at approximately 360 metres above sea level on a fully south-facing slope. Older vines, some dating back to 1972, produce naturally low yields and highly concentrated fruit. Nebbiolo is harvested by hand in October, with careful bunch selection before destemming and crushing. Fermentation and maceration last almost a month, with daily pump-overs to extract colour, aroma and tannin with precision. Following malolactic fermentation, the wine matures for nearly 40 months in Austrian oak casks before further temperature-controlled ageing, allowing its structure and aromatic complexity to harmonise. Production is extremely limited, at around 3,000 bottles per year.

Food & Serving
A wine of this stature is ideally served at 18–20°C alongside game, braised beef, roast veal or other richly flavoured slow-cooked dishes. It also pairs beautifully with truffle-based preparations and mature, hard cheeses. Decant for approximately 1–2 hours when opening the bottle young, or pour carefully off the sediment if enjoying it after extended cellaring.

Oddero is one of Piedmont’s historic wine families, with roots in the region dating back to the 18th century. The estate is particularly associated with traditional, terroir-driven Barolo and its work in some of the denomination’s most prestigious vineyards. By preserving the identity of the Vigna Rionda cru and releasing this Riserva in very small quantities, Oddero presents a highly distinctive expression of Serralunga d’Alba—one suited both to long-term cellaring and to comparative or vertical tastings.
