Description

Montrose 2019 is a benchmark Saint-Estèphe, uniting the power and depth for which this Second Growth is famous with a striking sense of refinement. It’s a finely crafted, cellar-worthy Bordeaux that showcases the estate’s gravelly Médoc terroir and classic Left Bank character in a particularly polished, sensual style. Analytically as concentrated as the monumental 2018, the 2019 distinguishes itself by greater elegance, harmony, and finesse, making it one of the standout vintages of recent decades at Montrose.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Montrose 2019 is deep, opaque garnet with a vivid ruby rim, signalling both concentration and youthful energy. The nose is dramatic and perfumed, opening with wild berries and blackcurrant before unfurling layers of lilac, violets, graphite pencil shavings, subtle licorice, and finely integrated new oak. With air, hints of crushed stones, cedar, and a touch of dark chocolate emerge. On the palate, this is full-bodied yet impeccably balanced, with a sweet core of ripe black and blue fruits framed by lively acidity and beautifully refined, powdery tannins. The wine is layered and multidimensional, gliding across the palate with a sense of effortless precision rather than brute force. The finish is long, resonant and mineral, echoing cassis, violet, and graphite notes long after each sip. While already impressive in its youth, the structure and depth suggest excellent aging potential; expect it to evolve gracefully over 20–30 years, gaining complexity, tertiary notes of tobacco, leather and truffle, and an even silkier texture.

Production
Château Montrose sits on one of the greatest terroirs in Saint-Estèphe: deep Garonne gravels over clay, overlooking the Gironde estuary, which helps moderate temperatures and protect the vines. This classic Médoc geology naturally favors Cabernet Sauvignon, giving wines with power, freshness, and a strong mineral spine. The grapes are harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, with rigorous sorting to ensure only pristine fruit makes it into the grand vin. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled vats, with careful extraction to capture intensity without harshness, followed by élevage in a high proportion of French oak barriques (a significant share new), where the wine matures and its tannins are polished. The 2019 is notable for the seamless integration of oak and fruit, reflecting both meticulous vineyard work and precision in the cellar.

Food & Serving
Montrose 2019 is a classic partner for richly flavored meats and refined French cuisine. Think roast or grilled lamb with herbs, prime rib of beef, venison, or braised short ribs, as well as game birds, earthy mushroom dishes, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or matured Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and balance. In its youth, decanting for 2–3 hours is recommended to allow the wine to open fully and soften the tannins; as it matures in bottle, a shorter decant of around 1 hour will generally be sufficient, more to let the bouquet unfurl than to tame structure.

Producer
Château Montrose, classified as a Deuxième Cru (Second Growth) in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, is one of the flagship estates of Saint-Estèphe and a reference point for age-worthy, Cabernet-driven Bordeaux. Established in the 19th century on what was once wild heathland, Montrose quickly built a reputation for producing powerful, long-lived wines that rival many First Growths in stature. Under the current ownership of the Bouygues family, the estate has undergone significant investment in both vineyard management and cellar technology, raising quality to even greater heights. Montrose is now widely regarded as a leading voice of its appellation, regularly earning top critical acclaim and producing some of the Médoc’s most collectible wines, with 2019 standing out as a particularly complete and refined expression of the château’s historic style.
