Description

Mirafiore Barolo Paiagallo 2016 is a classic, single-vineyard Barolo from one of the region’s most storied estates, Casa E. di Mirafiore. Sourced from the revered Paiagallo cru above the village of Barolo, this wine captures the purity, tension and elegance that made 2016 such a standout vintage in Piedmont. Presented in a specially designed bottle made from 85% recycled glass by Saint-Gobain Vetri, it combines historical pedigree with a modern, sustainable touch.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Mirafiore Barolo Paiagallo 2016 shows a luminous garnet core with brick-red reflections at the rim – already hinting at its Nebbiolo heritage and classic Barolo style. The nose is lifted and complex, opening with rose petals, dried violets and sour cherry, followed by notes of redcurrant, blood orange peel and wild strawberries. With air, more savoury layers emerge: liquorice, tobacco leaf, sandalwood, hints of truffle and subtle spice from large casks. On the palate, the wine is precise and finely etched, with a core of juicy red cherry, raspberry and pomegranate framed by firm, chalky tannins. The structure is typical of top Barolo – powerful yet refined – with vibrant acidity giving the wine great energy and length. Flavours of dried herbs, anise, leather and earthy minerality carry through to a long, persistent finish. 2016 is a superb, ageworthy vintage: this Barolo is already beautiful but will continue to gain complexity and harmony over the next 10–20 years, and well beyond in top cellars.

Production
The Paiagallo vineyard lies on the hills above the village of Barolo, with predominantly calcareous marl and clay soils that are ideal for Nebbiolo, offering excellent drainage and a distinctive mineral backbone. Exposed mainly to the southeast and sitting at altitude, the vines benefit from long, even ripening, preserving aromatic finesse and freshness. Grapes are typically harvested by hand in small crates to ensure careful selection of bunches at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, traditional Piedmontese methods are followed: after destemming and crushing, a long maceration on the skins extracts colour, tannin and aromatics, followed by a slow fermentation. The wine is then aged for an extended period – customarily around two years – in large Slavonian oak casks (botti), which respect the purity of the fruit and terroir, before further bottle maturation to refine the tannins and integrate its complex bouquet. The specially designed bottle, made with 85% recycled glass, underscores the estate’s commitment to sustainability without compromising on heritage and presentation.

Food & Serving
Mirafiore Barolo Paiagallo 2016 shines alongside rich, savoury dishes that can stand up to its structure and aromatic intensity. Think braised beef or veal, osso buco, slow-cooked lamb shank, game birds, truffle dishes, mushroom risotto, aged Parmigiano Reggiano or other hard cheeses. It is also a classic partner for Piedmontese specialities such as tajarin with ragù, brasato al Barolo and dishes enriched with white truffle. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Nebbiolo glasses to allow the bouquet to fully open. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to soften the tannins and release the full aromatic spectrum; more mature bottles may need a gentler, shorter decant primarily to remove any sediment.

Producer
Casa E. di Mirafiore is one of Barolo’s historic names, originally founded in the late 19th century by Count Emanuele di Mirafiore, son of King Vittorio Emanuele II of Italy. Closely linked to the royal estate of Fontanafredda in Serralunga d’Alba, Mirafiore helped define the classic style of Barolo that made the region world-famous. After a period of dormancy, the brand was revived with a strong focus on traditional winemaking, estate vineyards and sustainable practices, returning it to its former prestige. Today, Casa E. di Mirafiore is recognised as an important guardian of Barolo heritage, crafting ageworthy, terroir-driven Nebbiolo from top crus like Paiagallo, and earning critical acclaim for wines that balance authenticity, elegance and longevity.
