Michele Satta Bolgheri Superiore Piastraia 2023 is a refined expression of Bolgheri that brings together Bordeaux structure, Tuscan grace, and Mediterranean depth in a single cuvée. First planted in 1991, this blend has become a benchmark for the estate’s vision of Bolgheri—powerful, balanced, and unmistakably place-driven.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows the deep, polished color you’d expect from a serious coastal Tuscan red. The bouquet is layered and inviting, with dark berries, plum, Mediterranean herbs, spice, and subtle savory notes, supported by the lift and freshness that Bolgheri wines are known for.
On the palate, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot provide definition and richness, Sangiovese adds energy and finesse, while Syrah contributes warmth, spice, and complexity. The result is a wine with depth, texture, and a long, elegant finish. It should age beautifully over the next several years, gaining more nuance and harmony with time.
Production
The grapes come from Michele Satta’s Bolgheri vineyards, where coastal influence, warm Mediterranean sunlight, and cooling breezes help achieve ripeness while preserving freshness. The blend was first conceived in 1991, with the aim of uniting Bordeaux varieties, Tuscan tradition, and Syrah’s Mediterranean character in a way that truly reflects Bolgheri. Since 2012, the wine has been released as Bolgheri Superiore, underlining its quality and the estate’s confidence in the original blend.
Food & Serving
This is a natural partner for grilled or roasted red meats, game, lamb, and hearty Tuscan dishes such as bistecca alla Fiorentina or wild boar ragù. It also works well with aged cheeses and mushroom-based recipes. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for about an hour if drinking young to allow the wine to open fully.
Producer
Michele Satta is one of the important names in Bolgheri, known for helping define the area’s modern identity through thoughtful, terroir-driven wines. Since establishing the estate, he has focused on blends that reflect both international structure and local character, and Piastraia stands as one of his most recognized wines. The decision to elevate it to Superiore in 2012 reflects the wine’s long-standing reputation and the producer’s role in shaping the region.
