Description
Michel Rolland Collection Yacochuya Malbec 2018 is a powerful high-altitude red from Argentina’s Cafayate Valley, made predominantly from Malbec with a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon. Crafted from old vines at nearly 2,000 metres above sea level, it combines the richness of Mendoza-style Malbec with the freshness and mineral tension of the Andean terroir. Its careful oak maturation and impressive structure make it a compelling choice for both immediate enjoyment and cellaring.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep, dark garnet colour. On the nose, ripe strawberry and raspberry are complemented by dried violet, spice and subtle oak nuances. The palate is full-bodied and concentrated, with a refreshing acidity that brings balance and energy to the generous fruit. Dense, well-defined tannins frame the wine’s layered texture, while 18 months in new French oak contribute depth and polish without overwhelming its freshness. The finish is long and persistent, and the wine should develop additional complexity with several years of bottle age.
Production
The grapes come from approximately 60-year-old Malbec vines planted in predominantly clay-siliceous and gravelly siliceous soils in the high-altitude Cafayate Valley. Strong sunlight and pronounced day-to-night temperature variation encourage full ripeness while preserving aromatic intensity and natural acidity. The grapes are harvested manually at night and undergo a careful double selection to protect quality in the high temperatures. Fermentation takes place in small stainless-steel tanks at controlled temperatures, followed by malolactic fermentation and 18 months of maturation in new French oak barrels.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C, ideally after allowing the wine to breathe. Decanting for 60–90 minutes is recommended, particularly when enjoying a younger bottle, to soften the tannins and reveal its aromatic detail. Its depth and structure make it an excellent match for grilled or slow-cooked beef, lamb, venison, rich stews and roasted vegetables, while mature hard cheeses will complement the wine’s savoury intensity.
Producer
The Michel Rolland Collection brings the expertise of renowned Bordeaux consultant Michel Rolland to distinctive wine regions around the world. Yacochuya expresses this approach through a union of Bordeaux-inspired winemaking and the singular conditions of Argentina’s Andean highlands, where old vines and extreme altitude produce deeply flavoured yet fresh wines. The 2018 vintage is noted for its structured style, polished oak integration and substantial ageing potential, and the wine has received 89 points from Wine Spectator.
