Description
Maximin Grünhäuser Abtsberg Riesling Eiswein 1996 is a rare, concentrated sweet wine from one of the Mosel’s most celebrated vineyard sites. Made from naturally frozen Riesling grapes harvested at temperatures below -7°C, this half-bottle captures the remarkable balance between intense fruit sweetness and refreshing acidity that defines great German Eiswein.
Tasting Notes
Brilliant golden in colour, this mature Eiswein offers an expressive nose of honey, ripe peach, apricot and candied citrus, with layers of dried fruit and subtle mineral nuances developing with age. The palate is richly sweet and concentrated, yet beautifully lifted by vibrant acidity. Its long, elegant finish combines stone fruit, citrus brightness and a delicate honeyed character. Already mature and highly enjoyable, it may continue to develop complexity for many years when stored under excellent conditions.
Production
The wine comes from the Abtsberg, a renowned vineyard within the Maximin Grünhäuser estate in the Ruwer Valley, where steep slopes and mineral-rich slate soils help give Riesling its characteristic precision and freshness. The grapes were left on the vines to become highly concentrated before being harvested naturally frozen at temperatures below -7°C. Pressing the frozen grapes separates much of the water as ice, leaving behind a small quantity of exceptionally concentrated, sweet must that is then carefully fermented into Eiswein.
Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C in small dessert-wine glasses. This elegant Eiswein is superb with fruit-based desserts, apricot or peach tart, crème brûlée and lightly sweet pastries, while its acidity also makes it a refined partner for blue cheese and mature, creamy cheeses. Decanting is generally unnecessary, although carefully pouring it into a small carafe can help a mature bottle open up and allows any sediment to be left behind.
Producer
Maximin Grünhaus, also known as the von Schubert estate, is a historic winery in the Ruwer Valley whose vineyards were once associated with the former St. Maximin monastery. The estate’s Abtsberg, Herrenberg and Bruderberg sites are regarded among the finest in the region, with Abtsberg particularly noted for producing precise, mineral-driven Rieslings. Its long-standing focus on site expression and traditional Mosel winemaking has made Maximin Grünhaus one of Germany’s most respected Riesling producers.
