Description
Max Ferd. Richter’s 2019 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese is a rare, intensely concentrated Mosel sweet wine made from hand-selected Riesling berries affected by noble rot. Bottled in a convenient 375 ml format, it combines the legendary steep-slope character of the Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard with remarkable richness, freshness and cellaring potential.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep, luminous golden colour. Its expressive bouquet reveals honey, ripe peach, apricot and candied citrus, complemented by the refined, almost saffron-like complexity often associated with noble-rot wines. On the palate, luscious natural sweetness is balanced by vibrant Riesling acidity, delicate mineral notes and a long, refreshing finish.
Despite its opulence, the wine remains precise and energetic rather than heavy. The 2019 vintage can be enjoyed now for its youthful fruit and freshness, but its concentration and acidity should allow it to develop beautifully over many years in a well-stored cellar.
Production
The grapes come from the steep, sun-exposed slopes of the Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard along the Mosel, a site renowned for its slate soils and exceptional Riesling quality. Only fully ripe, botrytised berries are selected and harvested by hand, with the noble rot concentrating the fruit’s sugars, aromas and acidity. After careful pressing and fermentation, the wine is matured over an extended period in cask, allowing its richness and complexity to integrate while preserving its characteristic freshness.
Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C. This Trockenbeerenauslese is a superb match for fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée, apricot tart, blue cheese and mature hard cheeses, while its acidity also makes it enjoyable on its own as a luxurious aperitif. Decanting is not essential, although a brief airing in the glass can help reveal its layered aromas; older bottles should be opened carefully and handled gently.
