Description
A rare and highly concentrated Mosel Riesling, the 2005 Mülheimer Sonnenlay Trockenbeerenauslese from Max Ferd. Richter showcases the extraordinary sweetness and longevity of Germany’s finest dessert wines. Bottled in a convenient 375 ml format, this golden-hued wine is a special-occasion choice for collectors, dessert-wine enthusiasts and thoughtful gifts.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden colour, reflecting its age and remarkable concentration. Its expressive bouquet combines ripe peach, apricot and honey with an attractive mineral nuance. On the palate, it is rich, luscious and intensely sweet, yet beautifully balanced by Riesling’s refreshing acidity. The finish is exceptionally long, leaving notes of orchard fruit, honey and stony minerality. With its concentration, acidity and noble-sweet style, this wine has excellent ageing potential when stored properly.
Production
Mülheimer Sonnenlay is a respected vineyard site in the Mosel, where steep slate soils and the region’s cool climate help Riesling retain its characteristic freshness. As a Trockenbeerenauslese, the wine is made from highly concentrated, late-harvested grapes, typically affected by noble rot, which intensifies their sugars and flavours. The 2005 vintage has developed additional depth and complexity through extended bottle ageing.
Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C. This Trockenbeerenauslese is excellent with fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée, apple tart, apricot desserts and blue cheese; it can also be enjoyed on its own as an elegant aperitif or after-dinner wine. Decanting is generally not necessary, although carefully pouring the wine into a small decanter may help separate any sediment in this mature bottle and allow its aromas to open.
Producer
Max Ferd. Richter is a historic family estate based in Mülheim in the Middle Mosel, with a long-standing reputation for producing refined Rieslings from some of the region’s finest vineyard sites. The estate is particularly recognised for wines that combine Mosel delicacy and slate-driven minerality with impressive concentration and ageing ability. Its noble-sweet Rieslings, including Trockenbeerenauslese bottlings, represent some of the most collectable expressions of the Mosel tradition.
