Max Ferd. Richter’s 1975 Mülheimer Helenenkloster Riesling Eiswein-Auslese is a rare, mature Mosel dessert wine from one of the region’s historic vineyard sites. Produced from intensely concentrated Riesling grapes harvested in freezing conditions, it combines remarkable sweetness with the vibrant acidity that allows great German Riesling to develop beautifully over decades.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden hue, reflecting its age and concentration. Its mature bouquet is rich and expressive, with aromas of ripe orchard and stone fruit layered with honey, spice and subtle evolved notes. On the palate, it is sweet, concentrated and richly textured, yet balanced by a refreshing thread of acidity. The finish is long and persistent, with lingering impressions of candied fruit, honey and warm spice. As a 1975 vintage, it is a fully mature wine and is best enjoyed now, although careful cellaring may allow it to continue developing.

Production
The grapes come from the Mülheimer Helenenkloster vineyard in the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, where the region’s cool climate and steep Riesling sites help preserve essential acidity. For Eiswein, overripe grapes are harvested only after temperatures fall below -7°C, allowing the water within the berries to freeze while sugars, acids and aromas remain concentrated in the press. The resulting wine is naturally sweet, intense and marked by the characteristic balance of German Riesling.

Food & Serving
Enjoy this Eiswein well chilled, around 8–10°C, alongside foie gras, fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée or blue and washed-rind cheeses. It is also excellent with poached pears, apple tart or lightly spiced desserts. Decanting is generally unnecessary; open carefully and serve from a suitable dessert-wine glass. If sediment is present, stand the bottle upright before serving and pour gently.
