Description

Massolino Barbera d'Alba 2020 is a beautifully polished expression of Piedmont’s beloved everyday red, elevated to something truly refined. Silky, medium-bodied and bursting with fresh red fruit, it’s the kind of bottle that seems to vanish from the table almost as soon as it’s opened. Crafted from Barbera grown around the historic village of Serralunga d’Alba, this cuvée combines classic regional character with Massolino’s meticulous approach, earning strong critical praise, including 90 points from Vinøs.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Barbera d'Alba shows a bright, vibrant ruby hue with a youthful purple rim, signaling freshness and energy. The nose is inviting and lifted, offering pure red cherries, wild strawberries and raspberries layered with notes of sweet spice, violet, a touch of rose petal and a subtle hint of licorice. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and silk-textured, with Barbera’s hallmark juicy acidity giving it mouthwatering freshness. Flavors of red berry compote, cranberry, and pomegranate are wrapped in fine, polished tannins and a gentle spice from careful aging in neutral oak and/or steel. The finish is clean, graceful and sapid, with a pleasant, savory twist that keeps you coming back for another sip. Enjoy it now for its vibrant fruit and charm; while Barbera can age, this 2020 is particularly delightful in its first 5–7 years, when its freshness and floral notes are at their peak.

Production
Massolino sources Barbera for this cuvée from vineyards in the rolling hills of Serralunga d’Alba and nearby sites, where calcareous and clay-limestone soils give the wines both structure and lively acidity. The grapes are typically harvested by hand to allow strict selection of perfectly ripe, healthy clusters, preserving the variety’s bright aromatics and natural freshness. In the cellar, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks to highlight purity of fruit, followed by a period of maturation—often in neutral oak and steel—to soften the edges without masking the wine’s floral and red-fruited character. The result is a Barbera that is both authentic and impeccably clean, balancing tradition with a modern sense of precision.

Food & Serving
This Barbera d’Alba is a highly versatile food wine that shines alongside classic Italian fare: think tomato-based pastas, pizza with cured meats, lasagne, and rich ragùs. It’s also excellent with grilled sausages, roast poultry, pork chops, charcuterie, and semi-aged cheeses like Fontina or Taleggio. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) to emphasize its freshness and aromatic detail. Decanting is optional but a short 15–20 minute aeration in a carafe or simply in the glass helps the floral and spicy notes open up beautifully.

Producer
Founded in 1896 in the hilltop village of Serralunga d’Alba, Massolino is one of the historic family estates of Barolo and a reference point for traditional yet finely crafted Piedmontese wines. Now run by subsequent generations of the Massolino family, the estate has steadily expanded its holdings in some of the region’s most prized crus while maintaining a strong focus on terroir expression and meticulous vineyard work. Renowned above all for its Barolo, Massolino has also earned a loyal following for its characterful Barbera and Dolcetto, which offer an authentic taste of the Langhe at a more accessible level. The winery’s consistent critical acclaim and its role in championing the identity of Serralunga d’Alba have cemented Massolino’s status as one of Piedmont’s benchmark producers.
