Description
Markus Molitor’s 1992 Wehlener Klosterberg Riesling Eiswein Goldkapsel is a rare Mosel dessert wine from one of the region’s most celebrated vineyard sites. Harvested as Eiswein and presented in a half-bottle, it combines concentrated fruit, vibrant acidity and remarkable longevity—an elegant snapshot of a mature vintage from the early 1990s.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows a luminous golden colour, reflecting its age and concentration. Its expressive bouquet reveals ripe peach, apricot and honey, complemented by the refined mineral character associated with the Wehlener Klosterberg vineyard. On the palate, rich sweetness is balanced by lively Riesling acidity, keeping the wine fresh and focused rather than heavy. The finish is long and persistent, with lingering stone-fruit flavours and a delicate mineral nuance. Well stored, this style of Riesling can develop gracefully for many decades, although individual bottle condition may vary.
Production
Produced from Riesling grapes grown in the steep, slate-rich Wehlener Klosterberg vineyard on the Mosel, the wine benefits from the site’s mineral soils and cool river-influenced climate. As an Eiswein, the grapes were harvested in a naturally frozen state, concentrating their sugars, flavours and acidity before pressing and fermentation. The Goldkapsel designation indicates a particularly selected and concentrated bottling within the producer’s range. The 0.375-litre format is traditionally suited to intensely sweet wines and allows for an ideal serving size.
Food & Serving
Serve well chilled, around 8–10°C, as an aperitif or alongside fruit-based desserts, poached pears, apricot tart and crème brûlée. Its sweetness and acidity also make it a superb partner for blue cheese, mature hard cheeses or foie gras. Decanting is generally unnecessary; carefully standing the bottle upright before serving and pouring gently is preferable, especially for a mature wine where sediment may have formed.
Producer
Markus Molitor is one of the most respected names in the Mosel, with a long-standing focus on expressing the character of prestigious vineyard sites through Riesling. The estate is particularly associated with wines of precision, concentration and exceptional ageing potential, including noble-sweet styles such as Beerenauslese and Eiswein. The Wehlener Klosterberg is among the region’s renowned sites, and this 1992 Goldkapsel bottling represents a distinctive and collectible example of mature Mosel Riesling.
