Description
Markus Molitor’s Graacher Himmelreich Spätburgunder *** 2004 is a mature German red from one of the Mosel’s most celebrated vineyard sites. Made from Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), it combines ripe berry character with elegant acidity, supple tannins and the depth that comes with age.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep ruby-red colour with subtle violet reflections. Its expressive bouquet brings together ripe cherries, forest berries and warming spice, while the palate is full-bodied and layered, balancing generous fruit with refreshing acidity. Soft, polished tannins provide structure without overwhelming the wine, making this a compelling mature Pinot Noir to enjoy now. Given its vintage, careful storage is important, and it is best approached as a ready-to-drink bottle rather than one intended for extended cellaring.
Food & Serving
Serve slightly cool, around 14–16°C, to highlight the wine’s freshness and aromatic detail. It pairs beautifully with grilled meats, roast poultry, game dishes and mature cheeses. Decanting is not essential, but a gentle decant for 20–30 minutes may help separate any sediment and allow the mature aromas to open in the glass.
Producer
Markus Molitor is one of the best-known names in the Mosel, with a reputation built on a detailed, site-focused approach to Riesling and Pinot Noir. The estate’s wines express the character of individual vineyards, including the steep Graacher Himmelreich, and are valued for their precision, balance and ageing potential.
