Description

Marchesi di Barolo Barbaresco Serragrilli 2023 is a refined Nebbiolo from one of the most distinguished hills in the Barbaresco appellation. Produced from the Serragrilli cru in Neive, it combines Nebbiolo’s floral elegance and firm structure with the depth gained from careful oak maturation. Marchesi di Barolo is one of Piedmont’s historic estates, with roots reaching back to the early 19th century.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a brilliant ruby-red colour with developing garnet highlights. Its expressive nose opens with delicate aromas of violet and dog rose, followed by red berries and subtle sweet spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg. On the palate, it is full-bodied, rounded and well structured, with polished, sweet tannins, balanced acidity and a persistent finish. Oak ageing adds depth without overpowering the varietal character, while further bottle maturation should allow the wine to develop greater complexity over the next 10–20 years when properly stored.

Production
The grapes come from Serragrilli, a hillside cru in Neive with a south-westerly exposure that benefits from sunlight until late in the day. The compact soils are composed of clay and limestone, with layers of quartz sand and fine silt, providing both structure and balance. Nebbiolo is harvested by hand before being carefully destemmed and gently crushed. Fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature, followed by around eight days of skin maceration with regular remontage to extract colour and polyphenols. The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in glazed cement vats, then matures in a combination of Slavonian oak casks and medium-toasted French oak barriques. The final blend is assembled in large traditional casks before bottle ageing.

Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 18°C. Decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended when enjoying the wine young, helping to soften its tannins and reveal its floral and spicy aromas. Its firm yet polished structure makes it an excellent partner for agnolotti with rich sauces, braised beef, veal, game and mature cheeses.

Producer
Marchesi di Barolo is a historic Piedmontese winery closely associated with the region’s great Nebbiolo wines. Founded in the early 1800s and based in the Langhe, the estate has played an important role in promoting the identity and quality of Barolo and Barbaresco. Its wines are recognised for combining traditional Piedmontese methods—long maturation in large oak casks and patient bottle ageing—with precise modern winemaking, allowing the character of each vineyard to shine through.
