Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2016 Malescot St. Exupéry shows a medium to deep garnet-purple hue, hinting at both concentration and youthful energy. The nose opens with vibrant blackcurrant and black cherry, followed by fragrant notes of violets and lilacs, warm earth, tobacco leaf, and a seductive touch of mocha and subtle spice. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied with layered, expressive black fruit—cassis, plum and blackberry—wrapped in ripe, grainy tannins that feel firm yet polished. There is a lovely line of freshness that keeps the wine lifted and precise, with the mocha and earthy notes returning on a long, persistent finish. Still youthful but already deeply appealing, the 2016 has excellent aging potential; cellaring for another 5–10 years will unlock further complexity, and it should evolve gracefully for 15–20 years from the vintage in good conditions.

Sourced from the gravelly, well-drained soils of Margaux in the heart of Bordeaux’s Left Bank, Malescot St. Exupéry benefits from a classic terroir of deep gravels over limestone and clay, ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon and its Bordeaux-blend companions. The grapes—primarily Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a touch of Petit Verdot—are harvested parcel by parcel at optimum ripeness, often picked by hand to ensure meticulous selection. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, allowing gentle extraction of color and tannin, followed by élevage in French oak barrels, a significant proportion new, to add structure, polish and aromatic complexity without overwhelming the purity of the fruit.

Food & Serving
This Margaux is a refined yet powerful partner for classic dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, grilled ribeye, duck breast, or slow-braised beef short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with truffle-infused dishes, wild mushrooms, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both fruit and finesse. Young bottles benefit from 1–2 hours in a decanter to soften the tannins and open the bouquet; well-aged examples can be decanted more gently, primarily to remove sediment.
