Description
A rare 1971 Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese from Hallgartener Schönhell in the Rheingau, produced by the Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rosenberg'sches Weingut. This distinguished German sweet-wine style is made from exceptionally concentrated grapes and is prized for its intensity, balance and remarkable capacity for longevity—making this mature bottle a compelling choice for collectors and lovers of historic Riesling.
Tasting Notes
The wine presents a deep golden colour, reflecting its considerable age and concentration. Its complex bouquet reveals layers of ripe and dried fruit, complemented by honeyed notes and subtle spice. On the palate, it is full-bodied and highly concentrated, with pronounced sweetness balanced by refreshing acidity and a long, harmonious finish.
At more than five decades old, this is a mature Riesling intended for drinking now, provided it has been stored well. Its condition will depend on the bottle’s provenance and fill level, but well-preserved Trockenbeerenauslese can continue to develop gracefully, gaining further nuances of dried fruit, caramel and spice.
Production
The wine comes from the Hallgartener Schönhell vineyard in the Rheingau and was produced as a Trockenbeerenauslese, one of Germany’s most concentrated Prädikatswein styles. This designation traditionally relies on individually selected, naturally shrivelled grapes with exceptionally high sugar concentration, often shaped by noble rot. The result is a small-production wine with remarkable richness, sweetness and ageing potential.
Food & Serving
Serve well chilled, at approximately 8–10°C, in small tulip-shaped glasses. Its sweetness and concentration make it an excellent partner for foie gras, blue cheeses, fruit-based desserts and pâtisserie, while its acidity can also complement lightly spiced dishes. Decanting is not essential, but carefully standing the bottle upright before opening and pouring gently can help preserve the wine’s delicate mature character and separate any sediment.
