Description

Lino Maga Montebuono 2019 is a singular expression of Oltrepò Pavese, crafted by one of Italy’s most storied traditionalists. Made from the historic local blend of Croatina, Ughetta and Uva Rara, it delivers a raw, characterful red that feels at once rustic and deeply authentic. For drinkers who seek soulful, old-school Italian wine rather than polished international style, Montebuono is a benchmark bottling. The Montebuono vineyard sits on steep, terraced slopes above Broni in Lombardy, where Lino Maga and now his son Giuseppe have worked the same parcels by hand for decades. Fermented with native yeasts and bottled with minimal intervention, this wine is a living link to a pre-modern Italy—an artisanal counterpoint to industrial Oltrepò Pavese that has fascinated collectors and sommeliers for years.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Lino Maga Montebuono 2019 shows a deep ruby core with garnet hues at the rim, reflecting its traditional élevage and the natural concentration of old vines. You may notice a very gentle natural spritz when first opened—a hallmark of Maga’s wines—which quickly integrates with a swirl in the glass. The nose is intensely savory and wild: dark cherries, black plum and macerated red berries woven with dried herbs, tobacco leaf, worn leather and a touch of underbrush. Subtle notes of dried rose, black pepper, and earthy spice emerge as it breathes, giving an impression that’s more akin to an old farmhouse cellar than a polished tasting room. On the palate, Montebuono is medium to full-bodied, with vibrant, slightly rustic tannins and lively, naturally high acidity that keeps the wine energetic and food-friendly. Flavors of sour cherry, blackcurrant and wild berries mingle with notes of bitter almond, dried violet, iron and a hint of balsamic. The texture is both grippy and juicy, with a long, savory finish that leaves a memory of dark fruit, earth and spice. While already enjoyable with proper aeration, the 2019 has the structure to evolve beautifully over 8–12 years, gaining complexity and smoothing its tannins with time in bottle.

Production
Montebuono comes from steep, limestone- and clay-rich hillsides in Oltrepò Pavese, Lombardy, where the Apennine foothills meet cooler breezes from the Po Valley. These slopes have long been known locally for their capacity to produce concentrated, ageworthy reds from Croatina, Ughetta and Uva Rara, grown together as a traditional field blend. The vineyards are farmed by hand, without systemic chemicals, in a low-intervention manner that reflects the Magas’ belief that great wine is made in the vineyard rather than the cellar. Grapes are harvested manually at full physiological ripeness, often a bit later than neighboring estates, to capture depth of flavor while still preserving acidity. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in old tanks or large wooden vats, without temperature control and with minimal handling, allowing a slow, natural transformation. The wine is then aged in large, old botti, where it clarifies and stabilizes without the need for aggressive filtration or heavy sulfur additions. Bottling is typically done with a small amount of residual CO₂ and very low SO₂, contributing to the wine’s slight natural spritz and its ability to age gracefully.

Food & Serving
Montebuono is a quintessential table wine in the best sense—built to shine with hearty, rustic dishes. It pairs superbly with braised meats such as ossobuco, brasato al Barolo–style beef, or slow-cooked lamb shanks, as well as rich ragùs over polenta or fresh egg pasta. It also works wonderfully with cured meats (salumi from Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna), aged semi-hard cheeses like Grana Padano or Piave, and earthy dishes featuring mushrooms, lentils or game birds. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F). For the 2019 vintage, a good 1–2 hours in a decanter helps soften the tannins, release dissolved CO₂ and allow the wine’s more delicate floral and herbal notes to emerge. If you prefer the wine’s more rustic, energetic side, you can serve it slightly cooler and decant more briefly, but in all cases, avoid serving it too warm to preserve its freshness.

Producer
Lino Maga, often referred to by the name of his emblematic cru Barbacarlo, is a legendary figure in Italian wine—a staunch defender of traditional methods and a pioneer of terroir-driven bottlings in Oltrepò Pavese. Working the same steep vineyards around Broni since the mid-20th century, Maga famously fought to protect the Barbacarlo name and style, insisting on authenticity at a time when much of the region shifted toward quantity over quality. Today, with his son Giuseppe, he oversees a tiny estate making three principal wines—Barbacarlo, Montebuono and Pino—from historic field blends of Croatina, Ughetta and Uva Rara. The Magas’ insistence on low yields, handwork in the vineyard, native-yeast fermentation and minimal intervention has made their wines cult favorites among sommeliers, natural-wine bars and traditionalist collectors alike. In a region better known for mass-market production, Lino Maga stands out as a reference point for what Oltrepò Pavese can be at its most pure and expressive: distinctive, uncompromising and deeply rooted in place.
