Lino Maga Barbacarlo 2021 is one of Lombardy’s most distinctive traditional red wines, produced from a historic hillside vineyard in Oltrepò Pavese. A blend of Croatina, Ughetta and Uva Rara, it combines rustic depth with lively freshness and the individual character of a highly personal, artisanal wine.

Tasting Notes
Bright ruby-red in appearance, the 2021 shows an expressive, rustic bouquet of sour cherry, wild berries and dried flowers, with earthy nuances and a gently spicy character. On the palate, it is vibrant and savoury, with fresh acidity, supple tannins and flavours of red fruit, herbs and subtle undergrowth. Traditionally associated with a slight natural liveliness, Barbacarlo is a wine that rewards attentive tasting and can develop added complexity over the next several years when carefully stored.

Production
The grapes come from Barbacarlo, a historic vineyard site in the hills of Oltrepò Pavese, where steep slopes and relatively poor, well-drained soils encourage concentrated yet naturally fresh fruit. Croatina is complemented by Ughetta and Uva Rara, varieties that contribute perfume, structure and regional character. Lino Maga’s approach is rooted in traditional, low-intervention winemaking, allowing the fruit and vineyard to express themselves with minimal stylistic manipulation.

Food & Serving
Serve slightly cool, around 14–16°C, to highlight the wine’s freshness and aromatic detail. Its savoury profile pairs particularly well with salumi, rustic pasta dishes, risotto, grilled sausages, roast poultry, mushrooms and aged regional cheeses. Decanting is not essential, but a brief aeration can help open the wine; pour carefully if sediment has formed during bottle ageing.

Lino Maga is one of the emblematic names of Oltrepò Pavese and has long been closely associated with the Barbacarlo vineyard. Based near Broni in Lombardy, the estate has preserved an old-fashioned, site-focused style at a time when many producers were moving toward more standardized wines. Barbacarlo is regarded as a cult expression of the region, valued by enthusiasts for its authenticity, ageability and unmistakable sense of place.
