Description

Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc 2021 is a Clairette and Roussanne white from the Rhone, with pineapple, lime and honeysuckle fruit, gentle texture. It has the sunlit richness expected from 15% alcohol, shaped by old demi-muids and stainless steel. This is the estate’s rare white face, full of golden fruit and southern herb perfume.

About the Wine
Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc 2021 comes from one of the most recognisable names in the appellation, in a colour the estate releases in much smaller volume than its red. The blend is Clairette and Roussanne, giving the wine a compact identity within a region that permits a broad palette of white grapes. The vineyard soils bring together galets roulés, limestone, and sandy clay. That mix gives the wine a sun-warmed profile, with the roundness of Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc and a chalky edge under the fruit. The dry style suits the estate’s direct approach to white wine. In the cellar, Le Vieux Donjon ages this Blanc in a combination of old oak demi-muids and stainless steel. The old demi-muids bring gentle breadth rather than overt toast. Stainless steel keeps the lime and tart melon notes clear. The 2021 vintage carries 15% alcohol, so the élevage needs to support texture as much as aroma. The result is a white Châteauneuf-du-Pape with honeyed pineapple, floral lift, and a soft sheen through the middle. A faint sappy note sits under the honeysuckle and gives the finish its savoury grip.

Tasting Notes
The colour sits in a light gold register, and the first impression is honeyed pineapple lifted by lime peel and tart melon. Clairette gives the Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc 2021 a clean herbal edge, and Roussanne adds honeysuckle, waxy pear, and a rounded feel across the palate. The texture is broad and plush, with old oak demi-muids giving a quiet creaminess that never tastes like new wood. The finish carries ripe citrus, yellow fruit, and a faint saline touch that recalls the limestone in the vineyard mix. Drink 2024-2030.

Food Pairing
This white has enough weight for fish in a rich sauce, especially turbot with beurre blanc or cod with saffron and fennel. Its lime and pineapple notes also suit seafood with sweetness, such as scallops browned in butter or prawns with garlic and parsley. For a regional match, pour it with Provençal bourride, where the aioli and white fish meet the wine’s creamy middle and herbal southern accent. Poultry is another strong route, especially roast chicken with lemon, thyme, and pan juices. Soft cheeses such as Saint-Marcellin or a young goat cheese bring out the honeysuckle side of the Roussanne.

Producer
Le Vieux Donjon is a Châteauneuf-du-Pape estate with a remarkably focused range, centred on one main red wine and this much scarcer Blanc. That narrow range is the producer’s most revealing trait, as each bottle has to carry the estate name rather than sit inside a ladder of special cuvées. The white wine shows that same compact thinking through its Clairette and Roussanne blend, aged in old demi-muids and stainless steel rather than a flashy oak programme. The estate’s vineyards include the galets roulés that many drinkers picture when they think of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, plus limestone and sandy clay that give this Blanc its mix of ripeness and grip. Le Vieux Donjon’s style often feels grounded in place before cellar signature, and the 2021 Blanc makes that clear through golden fruit, waxy flowers, and a savoury finish. The label may be best known for red wine, yet this white has become a bottle people notice quickly when it appears in small allocations.
