Le Macchiole Paleo Rosso 2022 is the estate’s flagship wine, a refined expression of Cabernet Franc from Bolgheri on Tuscany’s Mediterranean coast. Originally created as a Bordeaux blend in 1989, Paleo Rosso became a pure Cabernet Franc from 2001 onwards, developing into one of the region’s most distinctive and highly regarded wines. The 2022 vintage received 96 points from Robert Parker.
Tasting Notes
Deep and concentrated ruby-red in appearance, the wine opens with an expressive bouquet of wild berries, dried violet and dark spices, followed by hints of mint, tobacco and Mediterranean scrub. On the palate, it is warm and enveloping, combining polished, velvety tannins with vibrant freshness and a distinctive saline character. The finish is intense, persistent and finely structured, with the fruit, spice and mineral notes unfolding gradually in the glass.
Paleo Rosso has excellent ageing potential and should gain further complexity with time in bottle. It can be enjoyed now after sufficient aeration, but careful cellaring will allow its aromatic depth and finely balanced structure to develop further.
Production
The grapes are sourced from Le Macchiole’s vineyards in Bolgheri, within the municipality of Castagneto Carducci, where the coastal Mediterranean environment contributes freshness, aromatic intensity and a subtle saline quality. The vines are trained using spurred cordon and Guyot systems, and the grapes are carefully harvested by hand in the third week of September. Fermentation and maceration take place in cement vats over approximately 25 days, encouraging thorough yet refined extraction. The wine then matures for 18 months in new barriques, integrating oak with its concentrated fruit and polished tannins.
Food & Serving
This full-bodied yet elegant Cabernet Franc is a natural partner for grilled or braised red meat, Tuscan beef dishes, game and richly flavoured roasts. It also pairs beautifully with mature hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C, and decant for around one to two hours before serving to help the wine open fully and reveal its layered aromatic profile.
Producer
Founded in Bolgheri, Le Macchiole has become one of the leading names on Tuscany’s coast, known for producing highly individual wines that express the character of both the estate and its Mediterranean setting. Paleo Rosso is the winery’s defining cuvée and played an important role in demonstrating the exceptional potential of Cabernet Franc in Bolgheri. Its evolution from a Bordeaux blend into a pure varietal wine reflects Le Macchiole’s commitment to precision, terroir and the distinctive identity of the region.
