Description
Le Gallais Wiltinger Braune Kupp Riesling Auslese 1993, made in collaboration with the renowned Egon Müller zu Scharzhof, is a mature Saar Riesling of considerable pedigree. From one of the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer’s most celebrated sites, this rare wine combines the concentration of an Auslese with the vibrant acidity that allows exceptional Rieslings to develop gracefully for decades.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a luminous golden colour, deepened by more than three decades of bottle age. Its mature bouquet is layered with ripe stone fruit, honey, dried fruit and delicate spice, with the evolution expected from a fine sweet Riesling. On the palate, it is rich and full-bodied yet finely balanced by refreshing acidity, offering impressive complexity and a long, elegant finish.
This is a mature wine that should be approached with care, but its structure and acidity may allow further development if it has been stored in excellent conditions. As with any mature bottle, provenance and cellaring history will strongly influence its current expression.
Production
The wine comes from the Wiltinger Braune Kupp, a prestigious Saar vineyard known for its steep, slate-influenced slopes and cool climate. The Auslese designation indicates a selection of especially ripe grapes harvested later in the season, resulting in greater concentration and natural sweetness. The precise harvesting and vinification details for this 1993 bottling are not provided, but its balance suggests the classic Saar approach of preserving Riesling’s aromatic purity and lively acidity alongside its ripe fruit character.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at approximately 10–12°C, allowing the wine to open gradually in the glass. It pairs beautifully with refined fish dishes, poultry, lightly spiced cuisine and mature or blue cheeses; its sweetness and acidity also make it a natural partner for fruit-based desserts. Decanting is not essential, but a gentle decant shortly before serving can help remove any sediment and encourage the wine’s mature aromas to unfold. Avoid over-aerating an older bottle.
Producer
Le Gallais is a historic Saar estate associated with Egon Müller zu Scharzhof, one of Germany’s most acclaimed Riesling producers. The estate’s wines are particularly valued for their expression of the Saar’s cool climate, slate soils and remarkable capacity for long ageing. This 1993 Wiltinger Braune Kupp Auslese represents a distinguished and increasingly rare mature vintage from a producer with an international reputation for elegant, age-worthy sweet Rieslings.
