Description

Le Gallais ‘Egon Müller zu Scharzhof’ Wiltinger Braune Kupp Riesling Auslese 1989 is a mature German sweet Riesling from one of the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer’s most distinguished estates. Produced from hand-selected grapes grown in the renowned Wiltinger Braune Kupp vineyard, it combines remarkable concentration with the freshness and precision that define fine Saar wines. As a 1989 vintage, it offers a particularly appealing opportunity to experience a mature, collectible Auslese.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden colour, reflecting its considerable age and development. Its expressive bouquet brings together ripe peach, apricot and citrus fruit with mature, honeyed nuances and a subtle mineral character. On the palate, it is rich and rounded, yet lifted by vibrant acidity that balances the sweetness and gives the wine impressive definition. A long, graceful finish reveals further layers of ripe fruit and mineral freshness. This is a fully mature Riesling with excellent cellaring credentials. While it should be approached as a ready-to-drink wine, well-preserved bottles may continue to develop additional complexity, depending on storage conditions and bottle provenance.

Production
The fruit comes from Wiltingen’s celebrated Braune Kupp vineyard in the Saar, a site known for producing refined, long-lived Rieslings. The grapes were hand-harvested and carefully selected before being made into Auslese, a German Prädikat category reserved for richly ripe, late-harvested grapes. The wine’s balance of sweetness, acidity and mineral character reflects both the vineyard origin and the meticulous selection of fruit.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at approximately 10–12°C, allowing the wine’s aromas and mature complexity to unfold in the glass. Decanting is not essential, but carefully pouring the wine off any sediment can be beneficial; alternatively, open it shortly before serving and taste it over time. Its sweetness and acidity make it a natural partner for fruit-based desserts, apple or apricot tarts, crème brûlée and mild blue cheese. It is equally rewarding as an aperitif or as a contemplative wine after dinner.

Producer
Egon Müller zu Scharzhof is one of Germany’s most respected names, with a long-standing reputation for producing exceptional Riesling in the Saar. The estate is particularly associated with wines of purity, elegance, longevity and outstanding balance. Le Gallais, closely connected with the Egon Müller family tradition, contributes to this portfolio of highly regarded Saar wines, while the Wiltinger Braune Kupp remains one of the region’s notable vineyard sites.
