Description
Le Gallais 'Egon Müller zu Scharzhof' Wiltinger Braune Kupp Riesling Auslese 1988 is a remarkable mature Saar Riesling from one of the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer’s most respected sites. Produced from selectively harvested grapes and now over three decades old, it offers the depth, balance and complexity that make great German Auslese wines so sought after.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden colour, reflecting its long and graceful maturation. Its bouquet is rich and layered, combining ripe orchard and stone fruit with honeyed notes and delicate spice. On the palate, it is full-bodied yet well balanced, with refined sweetness supported by lively acidity and a subtle mineral character typical of the Saar. The 1988 vintage is ready to enjoy now, while careful storage may allow it to develop further in bottle.
Production
The grapes come from the Wiltinger Braune Kupp vineyard in the Saar, a renowned site known for producing elegant, long-lived Riesling. As an Auslese, the wine is made from individually selected, fully ripe grapes, although detailed information on the precise harvesting and vinification methods for this bottle is not available. Its mature character reflects both the quality of the vineyard and extended bottle ageing.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at approximately 10–12°C to allow its aromas and mature complexity to unfold. It is a natural match for refined fish dishes, poultry with creamy or lightly sweet sauces, and mature or blue cheeses. Decanting is not essential, but a gentle decant shortly before serving can help separate any sediment and give the wine a little room to open; alternatively, pour carefully directly from the bottle.
Producer
Le Gallais is a historic estate in Wiltingen on the Saar and is closely associated with the renowned Egon Müller family, whose wines are internationally recognised for their precision, longevity and elegance. The estate’s wines express the distinctive character of the Saar, where Riesling is shaped by cool conditions, mineral-rich soils and a long growing season. This 1988 bottling is a noteworthy example of the estate’s capacity to produce beautifully ageing Auslese wines.
