Description
Le Gallais ‘Egon Müller zu Scharzhof’ Wiltinger Braune Kupp Riesling Auslese 1979 is a distinguished mature sweet Riesling from one of the Saar’s most celebrated sites. Produced in the outstanding Auslese category, it reflects the remarkable longevity of fine Saar wines, combining concentrated fruit, vibrant acidity and the mineral character for which the Wiltingen vineyards are renowned.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden hue, consistent with its considerable bottle age. Its aromatic profile is richly developed, suggesting ripe peach and apricot alongside citrus, honeyed nuances and a subtle mineral complexity. On the palate, it is luscious and full-bodied, with concentrated fruit balanced by refreshing acidity. A long, elegant finish brings lingering citrus, ripe stone fruit and a gently mineral impression.
This is a mature Riesling with excellent drinking potential when well stored. Although it is ready to enjoy now, its balance of sweetness and acidity may allow it to develop further, depending on the bottle’s provenance and storage conditions.
Production
The Wiltinger Braune Kupp is a renowned steep Saar vineyard known for its mineral-rich soils, cool climate and excellent conditions for producing refined, long-lived Riesling. As an Auslese, the wine was made from carefully selected, highly ripe grapes, traditionally harvested in multiple passes to identify the most concentrated fruit. Specific details of the 1979 vinification are not available, but the wine’s structure and longevity reflect the classic Saar approach of preserving fruit purity and balancing residual sweetness with pronounced natural acidity.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at approximately 10–12°C, allowing the wine’s mature aromas to open in the glass. It is a natural partner for fruit-based desserts, apple or apricot tarts, crème brûlée and mature blue cheeses, while its sweetness and acidity also suit rich pâtés or mildly spicy dishes. Decanting is not essential, but careful decanting may help separate any sediment and allow the wine to breathe briefly; for a mature bottle, taste it soon after opening and avoid extended aeration.
Producer
Le Gallais is a historic estate in Wiltingen on the Saar and is closely associated with the renowned Egon Müller family, one of Germany’s most respected names in fine Riesling. The estate’s wines are celebrated for their purity, mineral definition, sweetness-acidity balance and exceptional aging potential. Wiltinger Braune Kupp remains one of the region’s most important vineyard sites, and this 1979 Auslese offers a rare opportunity to experience the depth and elegance of a mature Saar Riesling.
