Description
Le Gallais 'Egon Müller zu Scharzhof' Wiltinger braune Kupp Riesling Auslese 1973 is a rare, mature Mosel wine from one of the region’s renowned vineyard sites. Produced in very limited quantities, this historic Auslese showcases the remarkable ageing potential of Saar Riesling, combining concentrated fruit, lively acidity and exceptional length more than five decades after the vintage.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a luminous golden colour, reflecting its long bottle maturation. Its mature Riesling bouquet is rich and complex, with layers of ripe orchard fruit and honeyed sweetness complemented by the nuanced, evolved aromas typical of a well-aged Mosel Auslese.
On the palate, concentrated fruit is balanced by vibrant acidity, giving the wine energy and poise despite its age. The texture is generous and harmonious, leading to a remarkably long finish. Properly stored bottles may continue to offer pleasure, although individual condition and cellaring history are especially important for a wine of this age.
Production
The wine comes from the Wiltinger braune Kupp vineyard in the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, a celebrated site known for producing expressive, long-lived Riesling. This Auslese was made from carefully selected, fully ripe grapes, resulting in the concentration and richness associated with the style. Specific details regarding harvest method, fermentation and maturation are not provided.
Food & Serving
Enjoy this mature Auslese lightly chilled, at approximately 10–12°C, allowing its aromas to develop in the glass. Its balance of sweetness and acidity makes it an excellent partner for foie gras, pâté, blue cheese and refined fruit-based desserts; it can also be served alongside mildly spicy Asian cuisine. Decanting is not usually essential, but a gentle decant may help separate any sediment and encourage the wine to open—taste first, as delicate mature aromas can fade with prolonged exposure to air.
Producer
Le Gallais is closely associated with Egon Müller zu Scharzhof, one of Germany’s most respected names in fine Riesling. The estate is known for its focus on exceptional vineyards and for producing wines of remarkable purity, concentration and longevity. This 1973 bottling is a distinguished example of the historic quality and ageing potential associated with the Wiltinger braune Kupp site.
