Description
A remarkable 1970 Riesling Auslese from Wiltinger Braune Kupp, one of the Saar’s most distinguished vineyard sites and a wine style renowned for its ability to mature gracefully over decades. Produced under the Le Gallais and Egon Müller zu Scharzhof name, this rare bottle offers a compelling opportunity to experience mature Mosel-Saar-Ruwer Riesling with considerable depth and history.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden colour, reflecting its long bottle maturation. Its complex bouquet combines ripe apple and pear with honeyed notes, citrus peel and the evolved, gently waxy nuances typical of mature Riesling. On the palate, it is rich and full-bodied yet lifted by refreshing acidity, with layers of orchard fruit, honey and citrus supported by a distinctive mineral character. The finish is long, focused and elegant. At more than five decades old, it is best approached as a mature wine to enjoy now; further development will depend greatly on its storage conditions and bottle provenance.
Production
Wiltinger Braune Kupp is a renowned Saar vineyard, known for its steep slopes, slate-influenced soils and cool climate, all of which help Riesling retain freshness while developing remarkable longevity. As an Auslese, the wine was made from selectively harvested, highly ripe grapes, although specific harvesting and vinification details for this historic bottling are not available. Traditional Mosel-Saar-Ruwer production would have focused on preserving the grape’s natural acidity and allowing the vineyard’s mineral character to remain central to the finished wine.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at approximately 10–12°C, allowing the wine to open gradually in the glass. Its balance of sweetness, acidity and maturity makes it an excellent partner for foie gras, pâté, roast poultry, lightly spiced Asian dishes, mature cheeses and desserts based on baked apple or pear. Decanting is not essential, but carefully standing the bottle upright before opening and pouring gently can help separate any sediment; a short period of aeration in the glass is generally preferable to extended decanting.
Producer
The Le Gallais estate is closely associated with the renowned Egon Müller family, whose wines from the Saar are celebrated internationally for their precision, elegance and exceptional ageing potential. The historic Scharzhof tradition has played an important role in establishing the Saar as a source of some of Germany’s most sought-after Rieslings. This 1970 bottling is a particularly distinctive expression of that heritage, combining the reputation of the producer with the character of a respected vineyard and an exceptionally mature vintage.
