Laherte Frères Les Empreintes Extra Brut Millésime 2019 is a distinctive vintage Champagne from the Coteaux Sud d’Épernay, crafted to express the character of individual vineyard plots. A blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, it combines the former’s freshness and elegance with the latter’s structure, resulting in a precise, mineral and gastronomic Champagne with a strong sense of place.
Tasting Notes
Bright and refined in appearance, the wine carries a fine, persistent stream of delicate bubbles. The nose opens with vibrant aromas of lime, pineapple, melon and ripe yellow peach, complemented by subtle mineral nuances. On the palate, it is dry, saline and juicy, with a lively acidity and an intriguing savoury, umami character. The texture is focused and energetic, while the Extra Brut finish is long, clean and marked by chalky minerality. With its structure and vintage depth, it should develop further complexity over the next several years while remaining highly expressive now.
Production
The grapes come from Chavot-Courcourt in the renowned Coteaux Sud d’Épernay, where chalk and fine clay soils are complemented by richer parcels containing flint and limestone. Laherte Frères vinifies the individual plots separately and uses gentle pressing to preserve the purity of the fruit. Fermentation takes place in oak barrels without malolactic conversion, helping to retain the wine’s tension and freshness, while maturation in wood adds texture and balance. The wine then undergoes a second fermentation in bottle according to the traditional method before receiving an Extra Brut dosage, preserving its dry, precise and saline style.
Food & Serving
Its combination of freshness, minerality and savoury depth makes this Champagne particularly well suited to seafood, shellfish, oysters and sushi. It also pairs beautifully with delicately fried fish, tempura-style dishes and soft-ripened cheeses. Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C. Decanting is not usually necessary, although allowing the wine a few minutes in the glass can reveal additional layers of fruit and mineral complexity.
Producer
Founded in 1889, Laherte Frères is based in Chavot-Courcourt and is known for championing the individuality of the Champagne terroir. The house places particular emphasis on plot-by-plot vinification, traditional methods and thoughtful élevage in wood, creating Champagnes with both authenticity and precision. Les Empreintes reflects this philosophy by highlighting the chalk, clay, flint and limestone soils of the Coteaux Sud d’Épernay. The cuvée has also received notable critical recognition, including a 94-point score from James Suckling.
