Description

La Spinetta’s Barbera d’Asti Superiore Bionzo 2022 is a focused, characterful red from the heart of Monferrato, made from venerable old vines and shaped by the estate’s commitment to precision and quality. First conceived as part of La Spinetta’s early exploration of Barbera’s potential in Asti, it stands out for its balance of ripe fruit, structure, and refined barrel aging.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Bionzo typically shows a deep ruby color with impressive intensity. The nose is expressive and layered, offering black cherry, plum, and red berry fruit alongside violet notes, spice, toasted wood, and a subtle earthy mineral edge. On the palate, Barbera’s natural freshness gives the wine lift and energy, while the old-vine fruit brings concentration and depth. Expect a generous, silky texture, lively acidity, and a long, polished finish with dark fruit, cocoa, and savory spice. This is a Barbera with the structure to develop well over the next 8–12 years, gaining greater complexity with time.

Production
Bionzo comes from south-facing vineyards in Costigliole d’Asti, around 300 meters above sea level, in the upper Monferrato zone of Piedmont. The soils are calcareous with sedimentary rock, and the continental climate brings marked day-to-night temperature shifts and very limited rainfall, helping preserve freshness and aromatic precision. The vines are around 60 years old and trained in Guyot, with no use of pesticides or herbicides; harvest takes place from late September into the first week of October, with only the best clusters selected before fermentation in rotofermenters and aging for about 18 months in barriques, followed by time in stainless steel and a final three months in bottle.

Food & Serving
This is a versatile food wine, especially with rich but not overly heavy dishes such as braised beef, roast lamb, mushroom risotto, grilled sausages, and aged hard cheeses. Serve it at 16–18°C, and decant for about 30–60 minutes if drinking young to help open up the aromas and soften the structure.

Producer
La Spinetta is one of Piedmont’s most respected modern producers, known for combining meticulous vineyard work with a distinctive, expressive style. Founded by the Rivetti family, the estate helped raise the profile of top-quality Barbera in Asti and Monferrato, and has earned a strong reputation for wines that balance power, elegance, and site identity.

Value for money

Barbera is one of my favourite grapes, and La Spinetta consistently one of my favourite wineries. More known for their iconic Barbaresco wines, La Spinetta make high value wines of the other regional grape varietals. So if a full bodied but soft and luscious red wine is what you enjoy, you need this in your glass. This wine can easily be left to cellar or drink now. With food or without!
