Why shop with us?
Krug Clos du Mesnil 2004 is a rare, single-vineyard Blanc de Blancs Champagne, made exclusively from Chardonnay grown in the walled Clos du Mesnil vineyard. Its origin reflects an unconventional idea first realised by Krug with the 1979 vintage: to let one exceptional parcel and one harvest tell their story, rather than blending across sites and years.
Tasting Notes
A deep, intense golden hue leads to aromas of ripe wheat, toffee apple, caramel, mature citrus and lightly toasted nuts. The palate is generous and broad, with brown sugar, candied ginger and pecan giving way to citrus and a vivid surge of freshness. Its long, elegant finish brings the wine’s richness into balance. With careful cellaring, this vintage has the structure to develop further, though its precise evolution will depend on storage conditions.
Production
The Chardonnay comes from the 1.84-hectare Clos du Mesnil, a walled vineyard in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, one of Champagne’s most celebrated villages for the variety. This single-parcel, single-vintage approach highlights the character of the vineyard and the 2004 harvest. Specific harvesting and vinification details are not provided.
Food & Serving
Enjoy with roasted or grilled scallops, lobster, delicate white fish or poultry with a creamy sauce; mature Comté also makes a fine match. Serve at around 10–12°C to reveal both its complexity and freshness. Decanting is optional: if desired, pour gently into a narrow carafe shortly before serving, taking care to preserve the Champagne’s effervescence.
Producer
Founded by Joseph Krug in 1843, Champagne Krug is known for expressive, meticulously crafted Champagnes and a philosophy that gives each wine a distinct identity. Clos du Mesnil stands apart within the house’s range as a tribute to a single vineyard and to Chardonnay, with its first release, the 1979 vintage, challenging the Champagne convention of blending wines from multiple parcels.
