Description

A remarkable piece of Rheingau wine history, this 1915 Steinberger Riesling Hochfeine Auslese Cabinet was produced by the Königliche Preußische Domänen-Kellerei at the historic Kloster Eberbach. With its exceptional age, prestigious Steinberg origin and elegant presentation in a 0.7-litre bottle, it is a compelling collector’s wine and a rare opportunity to experience a surviving pre-war vintage.

Tasting Notes
The wine is described as displaying a deep golden hue, consistent with its long evolution in bottle. Its mature bouquet combines ripe peach and apricot with delicate honeyed notes, suggesting the richness and complexity expected from an aged Riesling Auslese. On the palate, sweetness is balanced by refreshing acidity, while a fine mineral character carries through to the long, lingering finish. As a wine more than a century old, its condition and expression may vary considerably depending on storage history. It is best approached as a historic bottle to be enjoyed for its rarity and mature character rather than judged solely by the standards of a young Riesling.

Production
The wine originates from the celebrated Steinberg vineyard in the Rheingau, a site associated with Kloster Eberbach and known for producing distinguished Rieslings with depth, sweetness and mineral poise. The designation “Auslese” indicates a wine made from carefully selected, fully ripe grapes, while “Cabinet” reflects the historical terminology used for a particularly fine, carefully presented wine. Detailed information on the original harvest and vinification is not available; the wine’s remarkable longevity is a testament to the quality of the vintage, fruit and cellar conditions.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled, around 10–12°C, allowing the wine’s mature aromas to open gradually in the glass. Its sweetness and acidity make it a natural partner for refined desserts such as fruit tart, peach or apricot dishes, crème brûlée and blue cheese, while it may also be enjoyed on its own as a contemplative after-dinner wine. Stand the bottle upright before opening so any sediment can settle. Decant only if necessary and with great care, as very old wines can be delicate and may lose their aromatic complexity quickly once exposed to air.

Producer
Kloster Eberbach is one of Germany’s most historically significant wine estates, founded as a Cistercian monastery in the Rheingau in the 12th century. Its vineyards and cellars have played a central role in the region’s wine culture for centuries, and the estate became especially renowned for its Rieslings and other noble wines. The Königliche Preußische Domänen-Kellerei designation reflects the estate’s period under Prussian administration, adding further historical significance to this exceptionally rare 1915 bottling.
