Description
A rare and historic German sweet wine, the 1953 Kommerzienrat Krayer Erben Winkeler Hasensprung Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese offers a remarkable glimpse into the great wines of the post-war Rheingau. Produced from individually selected grapes affected by noble rot, this exceptional Riesling combines intense sweetness with the complexity that comes from more than seven decades of bottle age. Presented in a refined wooden case, it is a memorable choice for collectors and special occasions.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this mature Trockenbeerenauslese is expected to show deep golden to amber hues, depending on its storage history. The aromatic profile is rich and concentrated, with notes of honey, dried apricot, ripe peach and candied fruit, complemented by the nutty, spicy nuances that can develop in a finely aged sweet Riesling.
The palate is luscious and intensely sweet, balanced by Riesling’s characteristic acidity. Layers of honeyed fruit, baked stone fruit and subtle tertiary tones lead to a long, lingering finish. As a 1953 vintage, the wine is already fully mature; its future development will depend largely on provenance, fill level and storage conditions.
Production
Winkeler Hasensprung is a renowned vineyard site in the Rheingau, a region particularly well suited to Riesling thanks to its favourable climate and conditions for slow, even ripening. For a Trockenbeerenauslese, only highly concentrated, late-harvested grapes affected by Botrytis cinerea—known as noble rot—are selected, resulting in naturally intense sweetness and pronounced aromas. The wine was made from Riesling and bottled in a 0.7-litre format; specific details of the original vinification and maturation are not available.
Food & Serving
Enjoy this mature sweet Riesling slightly chilled, around 10–12°C, either as a contemplative aperitif or alongside foie gras, fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée and mature blue cheeses. It can also complement apricot or peach desserts particularly well. Because of its age, gentle handling is recommended; stand the bottle upright before opening and decant only if necessary to remove sediment, taking care not to leave the wine exposed to air for too long.
Producer
Kommerzienrat Krayer Erben is the producer named on this historic Rheingau bottling. While detailed information about the estate’s history and achievements is limited, the designation reflects a traditional German wine heritage, and the combination of the 1953 vintage, the celebrated Winkeler Hasensprung site and the Trockenbeerenauslese classification makes this a noteworthy collector’s bottle from the Rheingau.
