Description
Kaapzicht Rooiland Pinotage 2022 is a powerful, polished expression of South Africa’s signature grape, sourced from dry-farmed bush vines in Stellenbosch’s Bottelary Hills. Named after the region’s distinctive red, stony Koffieklip soil, “Rooiland” means “red land” in Afrikaans and pays tribute to the historic home of Pinotage, created in Stellenbosch in 1925.
Tasting Notes
Deep and richly coloured in the glass, this full-bodied Pinotage opens with intense aromas of blackberry, mulberry and blackcurrant, complemented by notes of vanilla, toasted oak and warm spice from its time in barrel. The palate is generous and concentrated, combining ripe dark fruit with a supple, textured mouthfeel.
Well-integrated tannins provide structure without overshadowing the fruit, while a lively freshness carries through the long, savoury finish. This is a modern, refined style of Pinotage that retains the grape’s characteristic power and generosity. It can be enjoyed now, with decanting, or cellared for approximately 5–8 years as the fruit, oak and tannins develop further.
Production
The grapes come from dry-farmed bush vines planted in 1995 and 1997, rooted in the lean, stony Koffieklip soils and weathered granite of Bottelary Hills. Naturally low yields of approximately 4.2–6 tonnes per hectare help produce fruit with notable concentration. The 100% Pinotage grapes are hand-harvested, destemmed and crushed before fermentation in stainless-steel tanks, using selected biodynamic yeast to preserve the character of the vineyards. Following gentle pressing and malolactic fermentation, the wine matures for 16–18 months in carefully selected 300-litre oak barrels, followed by additional time in concrete tank after blending.
Food & Serving
Serve at 16–18°C. Its rich fruit, supple tannins and smoky spice make it a natural partner for grilled or slow-roasted red meats, barbecued beef, venison, lamb and richly seasoned dishes. It also works well with South African braai specialities, hearty stews and mature hard cheeses. Decant for 30–60 minutes before serving to open up the dark fruit and integrate the oak.
Producer
Kaapzicht Estate is a family-owned winery in the Bottelary Hills north of Stellenbosch and has been in the Steytler family since 1946. Today, Danie Steytler and his son, Danie Steytler Jr., continue the estate’s focus on expressive wines rooted in the local terroir. The name Kaapzicht means approximately “view of the Cape”, referring to the estate’s elevated position overlooking Cape Town and Table Mountain. The winery is particularly respected for its historic vineyards, including a Chenin Blanc block planted in 1947, as well as its Pinotage, Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux-inspired blends. Much of the fruit is still harvested by hand, with a winemaking philosophy centred on preserving the character of Bottelary and the individual varieties.
