Description
Kaapzicht Chenin Blanc 2025 is a bright, characterful South African white made exclusively from old, dry-farmed Chenin Blanc bush vines in Stellenbosch’s historic Bottelary Hills. Combining low yields, granite-rich soils and careful lees ageing, it offers impressive concentration while retaining a fresh, lively drinking style. The estate is also home to a renowned Chenin Blanc vineyard planted in 1947, among the oldest surviving Chenin Blanc sites in South Africa.
Tasting Notes
Pale and bright in the glass, the wine opens with inviting aromas of ripe quince, pineapple and stone fruit, complemented by subtle spicy and savoury nuances. On the palate, it is juicy and gently textured, with generous ripe fruit and a discreet impression of sweetness balanced by crisp, refreshing acidity. The finish is clean, lively and invigorating, making the wine immediately appealing while offering enough structure to develop further over the next few years.
Production
The grapes come from old, free-standing bush vines rooted in weathered granite over crumbly clay in the Bottelary Hills. Cool breezes from False Bay help moderate Stellenbosch’s warm climate, while naturally low yields of up to just four tonnes per hectare contribute concentration and intensity. The grapes are hand-harvested, destemmed, crushed and gently pressed before the must settles overnight in stainless-steel tanks. Fermentation takes place with carefully selected yeasts to preserve the natural character of the Chenin Blanc, followed by ageing on fine lees until bottling. No oak is used, allowing the fruit, freshness and granite-influenced character to remain at the forefront.
Food & Serving
Serve chilled at approximately 8–10°C. This versatile Chenin Blanc pairs beautifully with grilled or pan-fried fish, shellfish, sushi, roast chicken and salads with creamy or mildly spicy dressings. Its texture also makes it a good match for lightly spiced Asian dishes and soft, fresh cheeses. Decanting is not necessary, although opening the bottle shortly before serving will allow its fruit and savoury nuances to unfold.
Producer
Kaapzicht Estate is a family-owned winery in the Bottelary Hills, north of Stellenbosch, and has been part of the Steytler family since 1946. Today, Danie Steytler and his son, Danie Steytler Jr., continue the family’s focus on producing wines with a strong sense of place and clear varietal character. The estate’s name refers to its elevated position and views towards Cape Town and Table Mountain. Kaapzicht is particularly celebrated for its historic Chenin Blanc vineyards, including the 1947 planting, and has earned international recognition for its Chenin Blanc, Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux-inspired blends.
