Description

Kaapzicht Bottelary Rooi Estate Blend 2023 is a full-bodied Stellenbosch red that captures the character of the Bottelary Hills through a layered blend of six grape varieties. Shiraz and Merlot provide generous dark fruit and plushness, while Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot add structure, freshness, colour and spice. Made by the Steytler family, who have farmed at Kaapzicht since 1946, it is a modern expression of a historic South African wine estate.

Tasting Notes
The wine has a deep, richly coloured appearance. On the nose, ripe blackberries, black cherries and dark plums are complemented by peppery spice, subtle oak and a touch of savoury complexity. The Shiraz brings warmth and dark fruit, while the Bordeaux varieties contribute aromatic depth and freshness. On the palate, it is rich and concentrated, with generous ripe fruit, polished yet present tannins and a lively core of acidity. Notes of black cherry, dark berries, spice and well-integrated oak unfold through a long, harmonious finish. The balance between fruit, freshness and structure makes the wine approachable in its youth, while its concentration and maturation in oak should allow it to develop further over the next several years.

Production
The grapes come from dry-farmed vineyards in the Bottelary Hills, planted between five and 25 years ago in predominantly Clovelly and Tukulu soils. Yields are naturally low, at approximately 5–7 tonnes per hectare, and the fruit is harvested by hand. Each variety is destemmed, crushed and fermented separately in stainless-steel tanks for around five to seven days, using certified biodynamic yeast strains. Following gentle pressing and malolactic fermentation in steel, the individual components mature for 16–18 months in 225- and 300-litre French and Hungarian oak barrels. The final blend is assembled after barrel ageing and given additional time in concrete tanks before bottling.

Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C, ideally after allowing the wine to come gently up to temperature. It is a natural match for grilled or slow-roasted beef, lamb, venison, hearty stews and richly flavoured mushroom dishes. Mature hard cheeses and dishes with pepper, rosemary or other warm spices will also complement its dark fruit and structured palate. Decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended, particularly when enjoying the wine in its youth, to soften the tannins and open up its aromatic complexity.

Producer
Kaapzicht Estate is a family-owned winery in the Bottelary Hills north of Stellenbosch, where the Steytler family has been established since 1946. The estate’s name means approximately “view over the Cape”, reflecting its elevated position and views towards Cape Town and Table Mountain. Kaapzicht is closely associated with historic vineyards, including a Chenin Blanc vineyard planted in 1947, and is respected for producing distinctive wines rooted in the Bottelary terroir. Its portfolio is particularly known for Chenin Blanc, Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux-inspired blends, which have earned significant recognition both in South Africa and internationally.
