Description

Judith Beck’s 2020 Schafleiten is a biodynamic St. Laurent from a single vineyard near Gols, where the variety has been grown since the mid-19th century. This elegant, finely made Burgenland red reflects the gravel-and-loess soils of its southeast-facing site and the region’s long-standing affinity for St. Laurent.

Tasting Notes
The wine is a transparent cherry red with a slight haze, consistent with its unfiltered, minimally handled production. The available tasting description is incomplete, so detailed aroma, palate and aging notes cannot be confirmed.

Production
Ried Schafleiten lies northwest of Gols on the Parndorfer Platte, with a gentle southeast-facing slope and soils of gravel and loess. The grapes are selectively hand-harvested and gently destemmed, then spontaneously fermented on the skins. The wine is aged for just over a year in old acacia barrels, bottled without fining or filtration, and given only a light addition of sulphur.

Food & Serving
Try it with roast duck, grilled pork, mushroom dishes or mild, semi-firm cheeses. Serve slightly cool, around 15–16°C; a short time in the glass should be sufficient, with decanting optional.
