Description

A rare and beautifully mature Mosel dessert wine, the 1976 Jos. Christoffel Jr. Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese Goldkapsel comes from one of Germany’s most celebrated vineyard sites. Produced in exceptionally small quantities from individually selected, naturally concentrated grapes, this golden-capsule bottling is a compelling example of the longevity and finesse of great Mosel Riesling.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden colour, reflecting its advanced age and concentrated sweetness. Its expressive bouquet offers layers of ripe peach, apricot and honey, with the mature complexity expected from a well-kept Trockenbeerenauslese. On the palate, it is rich and luscious, yet balanced by vibrant acidity and a fine mineral character. The finish is long, persistent and gently honeyed. Already fully mature, it should be enjoyed now, although well-stored bottles may continue to develop further tertiary nuances.

Production
The grapes originate from the steep Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard, a renowned Mosel site known for its slate-rich soils and favourable exposure. The 1976 vintage benefited from excellent growing conditions, while the Trockenbeerenauslese classification reflects the use of highly concentrated, individually selected grapes, typically affected by noble rot and natural dehydration. Harvesting was carried out carefully by hand, with production limited to small quantities to preserve quality and concentration.

Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C. This mature sweet Riesling is an elegant partner for fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée, pâtisserie and blue or washed-rind cheeses, while its acidity also makes it enjoyable on its own as an aperitif or contemplative after-dinner wine. Decanting is generally unnecessary, though carefully standing the bottle upright before opening and pouring gently can help separate any natural sediment.

Producer
Jos. Christoffel Jr., also known as Christoffel-Prüm, is associated with the traditional Mosel wine culture and the celebrated vineyard site of Wehlener Sonnenuhr. The estate’s wines reflect the region’s classic combination of aromatic Riesling, slate-influenced minerality and pronounced ageing potential. This 1976 Goldkapsel bottling represents a particularly rare and historic expression of that tradition.
