Description
A rare 1976 Trockenbeerenauslese from Ürziger Würzgarten, one of the Mosel’s most distinctive vineyard sites. Produced by Jos. Christoffel Jr. (Christoffel-Prüm), this exceptional Riesling represents the concentrated, noble-sweet style for which the historic Mosel-Saar-Ruwer region is renowned and offers a memorable experience for collectors and lovers of mature dessert wines.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden-yellow colour, characteristic of its age and extraordinary concentration. Its complex bouquet reveals ripe peach and apricot alongside honeyed tones and a subtle citrus freshness. On the palate, it is rich, full-bodied and generously sweet, with bright acidity providing balance and preventing the wine from feeling heavy. A delicate mineral character emerges on the long, persistent finish.
After almost five decades in bottle, this is a mature Riesling with considerable character. Proper storage is essential, and the wine’s condition may vary depending on its provenance and ullage. When well preserved, it should be enjoyed for its developed fruit, honeyed complexity and lingering freshness rather than held solely for further ageing.
Production
Trockenbeerenauslese is among Germany’s most concentrated Prädikat wines, made from individually selected, naturally shrivelled grapes with exceptionally high sugar levels, often influenced by noble rot. The Ürziger Würzgarten is a steep Mosel vineyard site known for its distinctive, mineral-rich volcanic and red-slate soils. While detailed information on the 1976 harvest and cellar methods is not available, the wine’s style reflects the meticulous selection and gentle vinification required to preserve Riesling’s acidity, perfume and remarkable longevity.
Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C, allowing a few minutes in the glass for its aromas to unfold. It is an excellent partner for fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée, pâtisserie and blue or washed-rind cheeses, while its acidity also complements foie gras and rich savoury dishes. Decanting is not usually necessary, but a careful standing pour can help separate any mature sediment; opening the bottle shortly before serving is generally sufficient.
Producer
Jos. Christoffel Jr., also known as Christoffel-Prüm, is a historic family name associated with Ürzig in the Mosel. The estate’s wines are closely linked with the celebrated Ürziger Würzgarten vineyard and with the region’s tradition of producing intensely aromatic, long-lived Rieslings. This 1976 Trockenbeerenauslese reflects the prestige of both its vineyard origin and its rare, highly concentrated Prädikat style.
