Description

A rare 1976 Trockenbeerenauslese from Graacher Domprobst, one of the Mosel’s most distinguished vineyard sites, produced by Jos. Christoffel Jr. (Christoffel-Prüm). Harvested in a celebrated historic vintage, this is a remarkably concentrated and age-worthy Riesling with the richness and rarity expected of a mature German noble-sweet wine.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden-yellow colour, reflecting its considerable age and concentration. Its intense, complex bouquet reveals honey, dried fruit and delicate spice, with the potential for further notes of caramel, marmalade and mature Riesling character to emerge as the wine opens in the glass. On the palate, it is full-bodied, rich and unctuous, balanced by the lively acidity that is a hallmark of fine Mosel Riesling. The sweetness is harmoniously integrated, while a subtle mineral character adds freshness and definition to the long, persistent finish. At almost five decades old, it is ready to enjoy now, provided it has been well stored, and may continue to develop in excellent cellaring conditions.

Production
Trockenbeerenauslese is among Germany’s most concentrated Prädikatswein categories. The grapes are picked individually at an extremely late stage, typically after noble rot has shrivelled and concentrated the berries, resulting in very low yields and intense natural sweetness. Graacher Domprobst’s steep Mosel slopes and mineral-rich soils contribute freshness and mineral structure, while the precise vineyard and vinification details for this historic 1976 bottling are not specified.

Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C, allowing the wine a little time in the glass to reveal its full aromatic complexity. It is an elegant match for fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée, pâtisserie and blue or mature hard cheeses, while its concentration also makes it compelling to sip on its own. Decanting is not essential, but carefully pouring it into a small decanter can help separate any sediment and encourage the mature aromas to unfold.

Producer
Jos. Christoffel Jr., also known as Christoffel-Prüm, is associated with the long-standing winemaking tradition of the Middle Mosel and the renowned vineyards around Ürzig and Graach. The estate is particularly recognised for expressive Rieslings that combine site-driven minerality with impressive longevity. This Graacher Domprobst Trockenbeerenauslese represents the exceptional concentration and cellar potential for which the Mosel’s finest sweet wines are celebrated.
