Description
A rare and highly collectible Mosel Riesling from the celebrated 1959 vintage, Joh. Jos. Prüm’s Wehlener-Zeltinger Sonnenuhr feinste Auslese Goldkapsel represents one of Germany’s most distinguished sweet-wine styles. Sourced from the renowned Sonnenuhr vineyard and preserved in a 0.7-litre bottle, it offers a remarkable opportunity to experience the depth and longevity of mature Mosel Riesling.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden hue, reflecting its considerable age and concentration. Its mature bouquet combines ripe peach and apricot with honeyed notes, while the palate is rich, layered and full-bodied, balanced by the refreshing acidity that is a hallmark of fine Mosel Riesling. The Goldkapsel designation signals an especially selective Auslese, resulting in notable intensity and complexity.
Now more than six decades old, this is a mature wine intended for immediate enjoyment rather than further cellaring. As with all very old wines, its condition may vary depending on storage, and it is best opened carefully and served soon after opening.
Production
The wine comes from the steep, sun-facing slopes of the Wehlener-Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, one of the Mosel’s most famous vineyard sites. Its Riesling grapes were selected from the finest parcels and harvested at the high level of ripeness required for Auslese. The wine’s character reflects the combination of slate-rich Mosel terroir, concentrated late-harvest fruit and the balancing acidity that allows great Riesling to mature gracefully over decades.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled, around 10–12°C, allowing the wine’s mature aromas to unfold in the glass. It is a natural partner for fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée, pâtisserie and blue or washed-rind cheeses, while its balance also makes it captivating as an aperitif. Decanting is not usually essential for a wine of this age; instead, open gently, taste immediately and pour carefully to avoid disturbing any sediment.
Producer
Joh. Jos. Prüm is one of the most respected names in the Mosel, with a long-standing reputation for producing elegant, age-worthy Rieslings from outstanding vineyard sites. The estate is particularly associated with the steep vineyards around Wehlen and Zeltingen, where Riesling’s combination of aromatic intensity, sweetness and vibrant acidity is expressed with exceptional precision. Its wines are highly sought after by collectors, especially from distinguished vintages and limited Goldkapsel selections.
