Description

A remarkable 1964 Riesling from Joh. Jos. Prüm, sourced from the renowned Wehlener-Zeltinger Sonnenuhr vineyard on the Mosel. As a Goldkapsel Auslese, it represents a particularly prized selection from one of Germany’s most distinguished historic wine estates, offering the depth and complexity that only mature Riesling can develop.

Tasting Notes
The wine shows a golden colour, reflecting its considerable age and development. Its mature bouquet combines ripe orchard and dried fruit with honeyed notes, subtle spice and the layered complexity typical of well-aged Mosel Riesling. On the palate, it is full-bodied yet balanced, with refreshing acidity supporting the wine’s richness and a long, lingering finish. With more than half a century of bottle age, this is a mature wine best appreciated for its evolved character; its condition and remaining ageing potential will depend greatly on storage history and bottle provenance.

Production
The wine comes from the steep, sun-exposed slopes of the Wehlener-Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, a celebrated Mosel site known for producing elegant, long-lived Riesling. The Auslese designation indicates that selectively harvested, fully ripe grapes were used, while the Goldkapsel classification denotes an especially distinguished selection. Specific details concerning the 1964 harvest, vinification and maturation are not available, but the wine’s balance and longevity reflect the classic combination of Mosel Riesling acidity and concentrated late-harvest fruit.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled, around 10–12°C, allowing the mature aromas to open in the glass. Its honeyed fruit, lively acidity and developed savoury-spiced notes would pair beautifully with delicate fish, poultry, pâté, mildly spiced dishes and mature or blue cheeses. Decanting is not always necessary for an old Riesling and should be approached carefully; standing the bottle upright before serving and pouring slowly can help separate any sediment while preserving its delicate aromas.

Producer
Joh. Jos. Prüm is one of the most respected names in the Mosel, with a long-standing reputation for producing refined, age-worthy Rieslings from prestigious vineyard sites. The estate is particularly associated with wines of purity, elegance and remarkable longevity, with Wehlener Sonnenuhr among its signature holdings. This 1964 bottling offers a rare opportunity to experience the character of a mature vintage from one of Germany’s classic Riesling producers.
