Description
Joh. Jos. Prüm’s 1971 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese Lange Goldkapsel is a rare Mosel sweet wine from one of Germany’s most celebrated vineyard sites. Made from exceptionally ripe, botrytised Riesling grapes and presented in the distinctive long gold capsule, it reflects the remarkable longevity and complexity for which Prüm’s wines are renowned.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden hue, potentially with amber tones developed through its long maturation in bottle. Its mature bouquet is richly layered, combining concentrated dried and ripe fruit with notes of honey, nuts, spice and the nuanced, savoury complexity that can emerge in an aged noble-sweet Riesling. On the palate, it is intensely sweet yet balanced by Riesling’s characteristic acidity, with a dense, concentrated texture and a remarkably persistent finish.
As a 1971 vintage, this is a fully mature wine intended for appreciation now rather than extended cellaring. Proper storage is essential, and the exact condition may vary depending on provenance, fill level and closure. When well preserved, it can offer a memorable expression of mature Mosel Riesling.
Production
The grapes originate from Wehlener Sonnenuhr, a steep, south-facing Mosel vineyard known for its slate soils, excellent exposure and ability to produce finely balanced, long-lived Riesling. Trockenbeerenauslese is among Germany’s most concentrated Prädikat wines: grapes remain on the vine until they are highly shrivelled and intensely concentrated, often with the influence of noble rot. The fruit is harvested selectively, though specific picking and cellar details for this historic bottling are not provided.
Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 10–12°C, allowing the wine to open gradually in the glass. Its sweetness and acidity make it a natural partner for foie gras, blue cheeses, fruit-based desserts and elegant pastries, while also complementing spicy Asian cuisine. Decanting is not essential, but careful decanting may help separate any mature sediment; alternatively, stand the bottle upright before opening and pour gently.
Producer
Joh. Jos. Prüm is one of the Mosel’s most respected historic wine estates, based in Wehlen and closely associated with the Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard. The estate is particularly celebrated for Riesling wines that combine purity, vibrant acidity and extraordinary ageing potential. Its noble-sweet bottlings, including Trockenbeerenauslese, are considered benchmarks for the Mosel style and remain highly sought after by collectors.
