Description
Joh. Jos. Prüm’s 1959 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese Goldkapsel is a rare and exceptionally mature Mosel sweet wine from one of Germany’s most celebrated vineyard sites. Produced from highly concentrated, late-harvested Riesling grapes, this 0.35-litre bottle offers a remarkable opportunity to experience the depth, sweetness and longevity of a historic vintage.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden hue, reflecting its considerable age and concentration. Its intense bouquet is marked by honey, ripe apricot, peach and citrus, with the layers and complexity expected from a mature Trockenbeerenauslese.
On the palate, it is rich and full-bodied, balancing generous sweetness with refreshing acidity. The finish is notably long and persistent, with the fruit and honeyed character developing further in the glass. At more than six decades old, this is a fully mature wine, although well-stored examples can continue to evolve; provenance and storage conditions are particularly important for a bottle of this age.
Production
Made from Riesling grown in the steep, sun-exposed Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard on the Mosel, a site renowned for its slate soils, mineral character and ability to produce exceptionally long-lived wines. As a Trockenbeerenauslese, the wine was made from individually selected, overripe grapes with intense natural concentration, typically affected by noble rot. The Goldkapsel designation indicates a particularly special and rare selection, traditionally associated with superior concentration and richness.
Food & Serving
Serve well chilled, ideally at around 10–12°C, allowing the wine time to open gradually in the glass. Its sweetness and acidity make it a natural partner for foie gras, blue cheese, fruit-based desserts and crème brûlée, while its mature complexity also makes it rewarding to enjoy on its own. Decanting is not usually necessary, but the bottle should be stood upright before opening and poured carefully in case mature sediment is present.
Producer
Joh. Jos. Prüm is one of the defining names of the Mosel, celebrated internationally for Rieslings of exceptional finesse, purity and ageing potential. The estate is closely associated with the steep vineyards around Wehlen, including the renowned Wehlener Sonnenuhr, and has played a significant role in establishing the reputation of Mosel Riesling among collectors. Its wines are particularly prized for their balance between sweetness, acidity and mineral precision, with historic vintages such as this 1959 serving as enduring examples of the region’s remarkable longevity.
