Description
A remarkable piece of Mosel wine history, the Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling feinste Auslese Goldkapsel 1921 comes from one of Germany’s most celebrated vineyard sites and has been maturing for more than a century. Produced by the renowned Prüm family, this exceptionally rare Riesling offers a unique opportunity to experience the character of a historic vintage from the Mosel.
Tasting Notes
The wine is described as showing a luminous golden-yellow colour, with the deepened tones that can develop through prolonged bottle age. Its bouquet is rich and layered, combining ripe peach and apricot with honeyed notes, subtle citrus and the distinctive mineral character associated with Wehlener Sonnenuhr.
On the palate, it is full-bodied and complex, balancing pronounced sweetness with refreshing acidity. Flavours of mature stone fruit, honey, citrus and delicate spice lead into a long, persistent finish. At more than 100 years old, this is a fully mature wine whose condition and remaining vitality will depend greatly on its storage history; it is best approached as a rare historical bottle rather than with expectations of further development.
Production
The grapes originate in Wehlener Sonnenuhr, a steep and highly regarded Mosel vineyard known for its mineral-rich slate soils and outstanding Riesling expression. As a feinste Auslese with a Goldkapsel, the wine represents an especially selective style made from carefully chosen, naturally ripe grapes. The 1921 vintage was harvested by hand and matured over many decades in the winery’s cellar, although detailed vinification records for this historic bottle are not available.
Food & Serving
Serve slightly chilled, at approximately 10–12°C, allowing the wine’s aromas and mature complexity to unfold in the glass. Its sweetness and acidity make it a natural partner for blue cheese, mature hard cheeses, fruit-based desserts and delicate pastries; it can also be enjoyed on its own as a contemplative aperitif. Decanting is not usually necessary for such an old Riesling, but standing the bottle upright before opening and pouring carefully can help separate any sediment. Given its age, open gently and savour soon after serving.
Producer
Joh. Jos. Prüm is one of the most respected names in the Mosel, with a long-standing reputation for producing elegant, age-worthy Rieslings from exceptional vineyard sites. The estate’s wines are particularly associated with the steep vineyards around Wehlen, including the famous Wehlener Sonnenuhr, where slate soils, exposure and the moderating influence of the Moselle create ideal conditions for refined, aromatic wines. This 1921 Goldkapsel is a rare expression of that heritage and a notable example of the enduring potential of Mosel Riesling.
