Description

Joh. Jos. Prüm’s 1983 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Eiswein Lange Goldkapsel is a remarkable expression of one of the Mosel’s most celebrated vineyards. Made from Riesling grapes harvested as Eiswein and presented under the estate’s distinctive long gold capsule, this mature bottling combines concentrated sweetness, vibrant acidity and the complexity that only decades of careful ageing can bring.

Tasting Notes
The wine shows a luminous golden-yellow colour, with the depth and richness expected from a well-preserved, mature Eiswein. Its expressive bouquet opens with ripe peach, apricot and honey, accompanied by hints of candied citrus, delicate spice and the subtle mineral character associated with the Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard. On the palate, generous residual sweetness is beautifully balanced by lively acidity, creating a sense of freshness rather than heaviness. Fine mineral notes and gentle citrus tones add definition, while the finish is long, persistent and refined. At over four decades old, this is a mature wine with outstanding drinking appeal; under excellent cellaring conditions, it may continue to develop further.

Production
The grapes come from the steep, slate-rich slopes of Wehlener Sonnenuhr, a renowned Mosel site known for producing Rieslings with both aromatic intensity and pronounced mineral freshness. As Eiswein, the grapes were harvested in a naturally frozen state, concentrating sugars, flavours and acidity before gentle pressing and fermentation. The resulting wine’s balance and longevity reflect the combination of frozen fruit, cool Mosel conditions and the exceptional quality of the vineyard.

Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C. This Eiswein is particularly well suited to fruit-based desserts, apricot or peach tart, crème brûlée and blue cheeses, while its acidity also makes it delightful on its own as an aperitif. Decanting is generally unnecessary; instead, open shortly before serving and pour carefully, especially if the bottle has been stored for many years and contains sediment.

Producer
Joh. Jos. Prüm is one of the most respected names in the Mosel, celebrated for precise, long-lived Rieslings from some of the region’s finest vineyards. The estate’s wines are especially renowned for their purity, elegance and balance between sweetness and acidity. Wehlener Sonnenuhr is among the Mosel’s classic sites, and a mature Riesling Eiswein from this vineyard represents a particularly prized style of German wine.
