Description
A remarkable piece of Mosel wine history, the 1961 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Eiswein-Auslese Goldkapsel comes from one of Germany’s most celebrated vineyard sites. Produced from naturally frozen, exceptionally concentrated grapes, this rare half-bottle combines the sweetness and intensity of Eiswein with the pedigree of the Wehlener Sonnenuhr and the prestige of Prüm’s Goldkapsel selection.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden hue, with the colour and complexity that come from more than six decades of bottle ageing. Its mature bouquet suggests honey, candied citrus, dried apricot and peach, complemented by layered notes of marmalade and gentle botrytis-like richness.
On the palate, it is sweet, concentrated and beautifully balanced by Riesling’s characteristic acidity. The finish is long and persistent, with lingering impressions of ripe stone fruit, citrus preserve and honey. A wine of this age should be enjoyed for its remarkable maturity; while its longevity is exceptional, the exact condition will depend on storage and ullage.
Production
The grapes originate from Wehlener Sonnenuhr, a steep, highly regarded Mosel vineyard traditionally associated with weathered slate soils and excellent exposure. As an Eiswein-Auslese, the wine was made from highly concentrated grapes harvested in frozen conditions, allowing water to remain as ice while the fruit’s sugars, acidity and flavour compounds were intensified. The precise historical harvesting and vinification details of this 1961 bottling are not documented here, but the style reflects the classic Prüm approach to pure, sweet Mosel Riesling.
Food & Serving
Serve well chilled, around 8–10°C, allowing the wine to open gradually in the glass. Its sweetness and acidity make it an excellent match for fruit-based desserts, apple or apricot tart, crème brûlée and lightly sweet pastries, while foie gras and mature blue cheeses provide a savoury counterpoint. Decanting is not usually necessary for such an old sweet Riesling; instead, pour carefully and consider standing the bottle upright beforehand if sediment is present.
Producer
Joh. Jos. Prüm is one of the defining names of the Mosel, with a long-standing family tradition in the vineyards around Bernkastel and Wehlen. The estate is particularly renowned for expressive Rieslings from the Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard, where slate soils, steep slopes and the region’s cool climate create wines of remarkable freshness and longevity. Its Goldkapsel bottlings represent especially prized selections, making this 1961 vintage a noteworthy collector’s wine as well as a rare opportunity to experience mature German Riesling.
