Description
A remarkable historic Riesling from the legendary Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard, the 1961 Joh. Jos. Prüm Riesling Eiswein-Auslese Goldkapsel combines the rarity of a naturally frozen harvest with the prestige of one of the Mosel’s most celebrated estates. The distinctive Goldkapsel indicates a specially selected bottling, making this a compelling choice for collectors, milestone celebrations and serious Riesling tastings.
Tasting Notes
The wine is expected to show a luminous golden hue, deepened by more than six decades of bottle age. Its mature bouquet brings together concentrated yellow fruit, honey, dried fruit and warming spice, with the complex, tertiary nuances characteristic of a well-preserved historic sweet Riesling.
On the palate, it is rich and full-bodied, balancing intense sweetness with the vibrant acidity that gives Mosel Riesling its longevity. Expect layers of ripe fruit, honey and spice, followed by a long, concentrated finish. At this age, the wine is best approached as a mature collector’s bottle: it may continue to evolve if well stored, although its condition and provenance will be decisive.
Production
Sourced from the steep, slate-rich terraces of Wehlener Sonnenuhr in the Mosel, a site renowned for producing Rieslings of exceptional finesse, mineral character and aging potential. Eiswein is made from grapes left on the vine until naturally frozen, allowing water to be removed as ice during pressing and concentrating the sugars, acids and aromas. The grapes for this historic 1961 bottling were hand harvested under these rare conditions; further vinification details are not available.
Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C, allowing the wine a little time in the glass to reveal its mature aromas. It is a natural partner for foie gras, blue cheese, fruit-based desserts and classic German pastries, while its acidity also complements spicy Asian cuisine. Decanting is not normally necessary for an old sweet Riesling, but the bottle may be stood upright before serving and carefully decanted if sediment is present. Open gently and enjoy soon after opening.
Producer
Joh. Jos. Prüm is one of the most respected names in the Mosel, with a long-standing family tradition in the village of Wehlen. The estate is particularly associated with the steep vineyards around the Wehlener Sonnenuhr, whose slate soils and sun-exposed slopes are ideally suited to precise, long-lived Riesling. Its wines are valued internationally for their elegance, concentration and remarkable capacity for bottle aging.
