Description

A rare half-bottle from the exceptional 1971 vintage, the Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Beerenauslese Goldkapsel is a remarkable example of Germany’s great sweet wines. Crafted from highly selected, botrytised Riesling grapes, this mature Mosel wine combines concentrated fruit, honeyed richness and the balancing freshness for which the Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard is renowned. Its Goldkapsel designation further marks it as a particularly distinguished and collectible bottling.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden hue, reflecting both its noble-sweet style and decades of bottle age. Its aromatic profile is intensely layered, with ripe and dried fruit, honey and delicate mature notes. On the palate, it is sweet, full-bodied and beautifully concentrated, supported by a lively acidity that keeps the richness in balance. A long, persistent finish leaves impressions of honeyed fruit and elegant maturity. Already fully mature, it should be enjoyed for its complexity, although well-stored examples may continue to develop further.

Production
Sourced from the steep, renowned slopes of Wehlener Sonnenuhr in the Mosel, the grapes were hand-harvested and carefully selected to achieve the concentration required for Beerenauslese. The wine was matured in oak casks, allowing its rich fruit and honeyed character to integrate over time. The combination of selective harvesting, noble sweetness and Mosel Riesling’s natural acidity gives this 1971 bottling both depth and longevity.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at approximately 10–12°C. This Beerenauslese is a natural partner for fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée, pâtisserie and blue or washed-rind cheeses, while its mature complexity also makes it rewarding to enjoy on its own. Decanting is not usually necessary, but carefully standing the bottle upright before serving and pouring gently can help separate any sediment that may have formed during its long ageing.

Producer
Joh. Jos. Prüm is one of the Mosel’s most respected family estates, based in the village of Wehlen and closely associated with the celebrated Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard. Founded in 1911, the estate has built an international reputation for precise, long-lived Rieslings, particularly its noble-sweet wines. This 1971 Beerenauslese Goldkapsel reflects the exceptional ageing potential and prestige of both the producer and the vineyard.
