Description
Joh. Jos. Prüm’s 1970 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Beerenauslese Goldkapsel is a rare and highly mature Mosel sweet wine from one of Germany’s most celebrated vineyard sites. Presented in a 0.35-litre bottle, this historic Beerenauslese offers collectors and fine-wine enthusiasts the chance to experience an exceptional vintage with more than five decades of bottle age.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden hue, reflecting its age and natural concentration. Its bouquet is richly layered, with aromas of ripe and dried fruit, honey and mature sweet-wine nuances. On the palate, it is lusciously sweet and full-bodied, balanced by the refreshing acidity characteristic of Riesling from the Mosel. A persistent, harmonious finish leaves notes of honeyed fruit and mature richness.
This is a fully mature wine that is best enjoyed now, although well-stored bottles may continue to develop further complexity. As with any wine of this age, condition and storage history are important considerations.
Production
The grapes were hand-harvested and carefully selected to retain only the ripest fruit suitable for Beerenauslese production. Sourced from the steep, slate-influenced Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard on the Mosel, the wine combines concentrated noble sweetness with Riesling’s natural acidity. According to the available product information, it was matured in oak casks, contributing additional depth to its long-term development.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at approximately 10–12°C. This mature Beerenauslese is a natural partner for fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée, pâtisserie and blue or aged cheeses, while its complexity also makes it rewarding to enjoy on its own. Decanting is not essential, but carefully standing the bottle upright before opening and pouring gently can help separate any sediment; a brief period of aeration may reveal further aromatic detail.
Producer
Joh. Jos. Prüm is one of the landmark names of the Mosel, renowned for expressive, long-lived Rieslings from prestigious vineyards along the river. The estate is particularly associated with the Wehlener Sonnenuhr, a steep and highly regarded site whose slate soils and favourable exposure provide the freshness and longevity for which its wines are known. This 1970 Goldkapsel Beerenauslese represents the estate’s tradition of producing rare, concentrated and age-worthy sweet Rieslings.
