Description
Joh. Jos. Prüm’s 1988 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel Versteigerung is a rare half-bottle from one of the Mosel’s most celebrated vineyards. Presented at auction and sealed with the distinctive Goldkapsel, it represents the estate’s most selective and sought-after style of Riesling, combining remarkable concentration with the precision for which Wehlener Sonnenuhr is renowned.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep golden hue, reflecting its age and concentration. Its mature bouquet brings together ripe orchard and stone fruit with notes of honey, spice and subtle tertiary complexity. On the palate, it is rich and full-bodied, balancing its sweetness with vibrant Mosel acidity. The finish is long, harmonious and layered. At more than three decades old, it is already a mature, rewarding wine, though well-stored bottles may continue to evolve gracefully.
Production
Produced from Riesling grown in the steep, slate-rich Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard on the Mosel, the wine benefits from the site’s excellent exposure and finely drained soils. As an Auslese, it was made from selectively harvested, fully ripe grapes chosen for their concentration. The Goldkapsel designation and auction presentation indicate an especially distinguished selection, although the available information does not specify the exact vinification or maturation regime.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at approximately 10–12°C, allowing the wine’s complexity to unfold in the glass. Its balance of sweetness, acidity and maturity makes it an excellent partner for roasted or pan-fried fish, poultry with gently spiced sauces, foie gras and mature or blue cheeses. Decanting is not essential for this mature Riesling, but carefully opening it 20–30 minutes before serving can help reveal its aromatic depth; handle the bottle gently if sediment is present.
Producer
Joh. Jos. Prüm is one of the Mosel’s most respected Riesling estates, based in Wehlen and closely associated with the region’s finest vineyard sites. The winery is particularly renowned for its elegant, long-lived sweet wines, which combine crystalline fruit with the invigorating acidity characteristic of the Mosel. Wehlener Sonnenuhr is among the estate’s signature vineyards, and a late-1980s auction Goldkapsel from this site is a notable addition for collectors of mature German Riesling.
